what a miserable man I am

whipsawed from the poles
the extremes of my condition
wanting to follow Christ
but dragged down by my flesh
my weakness ever before me
doing that which I have
what a miserable man I am
speaking the words of Paul
knowing all too well, for certain,
the consequence of my rebellion
knowing I was the Prodigal
who was welcomed home by God
but the flesh remains weak
the eye a damnation
the law of sin hanging over me
the path of my life
needing to cleave to Christ
to follow the Savior’s calling
but needing an active Spirit
to keep me from falling.
