With those in shackles, with the martyrs

Never with the oppressors
with the despots, the tyrants
in the falsehood of temporary security
while subjugating their people

We must stand, as Christ did
with the least and the lost
the last in the eyes of society
those who had been cast off

Standing with the oppressed
with those in shackles, with the martyrs
standing with the people, for justice
in all our decisions

The ends do not justify, ever
turning a blind eye to injustice
condoning torture by our allies
repression of their people

No, history may not judge us
because we are so strong
yet truth of our complicity
in the face of those people

Those who have been cast off
those who are marching for freedom
they know where we have stood
before they toppled the tyrants

Our history replete
with the decisions of expediency
when right gave way to security
the false security of the junta
the strongman in power
his boot upon his people

that when history books tell it
we will be seen as being on the right side of history
in how the United States responded
