Slowing down
though I had to go
one more cup of coffee
a game in the dining room
a game of cribbage begun
counting, one peg at a time
Tentative turns
wanting open hands
picking my cards
in my uncertain hands
counting in the way of the
game
15-2, 15-4, pair for two…
Watching the pegs race
around the board
chasing one another
in leaps and groans
one by one (that was me)
one peg at a time
Stopping to go,
a two hour drive;
the game half-played
handing my cards to my
mother
wondering how
it all came out
