we want to get even

we want to get even
to settle a score
to balance the scales
when we are angry
when there has been an injustice
when we are harmed
we want to get even
an eye for an eye,
and a tooth for a tooth
to mete out rough justice
but that isn’t Christ
that isn’t Christian
this isn’t the way
to walk in this life
