The Alarm of Your Advent

Your coming unplanned
in a time of God’s choosing
Your advent alarms us
setting us off balance
not in control
the illusion we enjoy
in this time and place
as we walk on the earth

The advent of Jesus
the coming of God
descending from the heavens
to fulfill the word
The promise of old
of his coming down
to heal the brokenness
to give up his crown

Changing our lives forever
if we change our focus
to the babe, the Christ-child
the one who walked the earth
Ours to follow
to answer God’s calling
to humble ourselves
as he did in the garden

The Christ’s coming
a challenge for the ages
not just those in Jerusalem
but for all of the age
To give up control
the illusion we cherish
to turn our lives over
over only unto God
