The Shock of the Leaders

Would we be so different
if the advent was now
if we had been waiting
for a Messiah of power
of the leader to come
from the root of Jesse
a shoot of David
to sit on the throne

Would we have been so different
like the shock of the leaders
a messiah in the stable
wrapped in swaddling clothes
no matter the scripture
blind to its reading
unable to comprehend
the wisdom of the divine

Would we have been so different
if Christ came among us
overturning the tables
calling us to believe
to change from the world
our oil not ready
to follow our shepherd
in the way of the cross
