In the rote of the ritual
the centuries of tradition
following the words
of the story long ago
The story of this people
chosen by God
delivered from the pharaoh
led to the promised land
All of this changed
a new people created
in the words of the Christ
in the upper room that night
The symbols changing
gaining new meaning
the bread his body
and the wine his blood
Joining the Christ-child
the man who would suffer
the disciples who would betray,
deny and run away
So we, just as unworthy
to the table he offers
salvation, his body, his blood
that we may live again
Remembering ever
a new people united
together in worship
at the table he set
