Already given up hope, on Easter,
that same day, that afternoon
when Christ had risen
when He had conquered death
by His authority, His power
What Christ must have seen
in the faces of these disciples
struggling to walk along
wracked with their emotions
on their Emmaus Road
Faces in utter rebellion
failing to gain control
wearing a mask of pain
over scars of grief
loss that had set hold
In that moment of crisis
Christ comes to them
a stranger coming to them
Their lives shattered
the weight too much to bear
Lost on their path
Contorted, a mask upon us
Twisted masks of grief
Dejected, walking home
despairing, unbelief
Changed in an instant, joy,
in the moment He broke break
the scales from their eyes falling;
This was Christ, risen,
Christ was alive!
Sometimes struggling in this life
faces twisted with grief
but then Jesus walks up beside us
A stranger speaking comfort
Offering us a message of hope
He takes up our yoke with us
walking through our trials
in the struggles of our lives,
staying right besides us;
Walking home with us
