Day / Night

We hear the words of scripture
the creation of the world
darkness all around
the Spirit o’er the deep
the chaos waters parting
“Let there be light!”
the day from the night
separating the darkness
separate from the light

Yet day / night
not a true bright line
muddles of color
shades of light and darkness
a jumble of grays
not clear what the path is
a journey of discernment
of listening for God’s calling

God the master
the day and the night
the same for our creator
equal in his sight
the way, the path
only in him
a light through the darkness
the journey with our king
