Christ giving meaning
to what the ancient words meant
why this was a new commandment
not restating the past
The words of the law
what the scholars would have said
to love Almighty God
and our neighbors as ourselves
Christ went further
beyond the mortal choice
to love as God loves
our Savior before us
We are to love one another
not as the ancient code
as we would choose to love
but to love as Christ loves us
Speaking a new word to them
hours before He would give up His life;
commanding a new law for us
as betrayal prowled the night.
