this season of Passover
spending time in Jerusalem
there as a pilgrim from my hometown
my children in tow,
to show them the temple
to share in our faith
Pulled from the crowd
the Roman authority,
the jeering guards, angry
calling me to carry his cross, the man Jesus
to bear it to the skull, Golgotha
the sweat of my Savior,
the dark stain of His blood
Falling heavy upon me,
leaning upon my body
as I carried him to that hill
his destiny beyond belief, sacrifice
the Christ, the Son of Man
carrying his cross to Calvary
feeling his shaking hand
The weight of the beam
the sweat, his blood-stained body
the smell, the dust, heavy
leading onward
up to the place of death
gathering him to me
to make him the sacrifice
He looked into my eyes
speaking barely a whisper
leading me to continue
aware of his destiny
resolute sadness, submitting
to God’s will, his plan
my Savior to this hill
