I have visited the cross of Calvary – v2

I have walked the ancient streets, countless times
the steps of God’s word, the ancient text
slowing my stride to match Christ
to linger with my Savior, my brother

I have visited the cross of Calvary, where Jesus died
looking up into Christ’s face, into the face of God
heard his loving word, his prayer, his cries
felt the weight of my sin placed upon him

I have trod these loving steps, the steps of the Lamb
I have longed to follow the Christ, my shepherd
coming up beside him, or more truly,
noticed that He was already there beside me

God wants us to accept his gift
aware of the sacrifice of the cross, of Christ
walking with him to Golgotha, the skull
praying at the foot of the cross

God calls us to walk with him, ever
to accept his offering of love
Christ taking my shame upon himself
to set me free from sin
