God, the judge, in heaven
Christ, the Son, on that tree
crying out a prayer for us
for the sake of you and me
Crying out to God, to forgive them
though we are the them
those who persecuted, denied
sinned like all the rest
Yet the prayer of Christ meaningless
bubbles in air, defusing,
evaporating as dew in summer
we don’t have a clue
We choose to wander
to go off on our own
as if we are in control
of our mortal soul
Christ’s prayer with power
we are to be saved
only in our turning
rising from our grave
Submitting to the will of God
giving as Christ gave
loving by his example
our lives written on the page
God will look down
lifting up Christ’s prayer
judging us fairly
at the end of the age
