What if we gathered in worship,
around the foot of the cross,
what if we each held up a sign
to speak of the cost,
how we failed to love,
why Christ had to die
Maybe one would say,
“I denied the Christ”,
another, “I sinned against God”,
or “I drove the nails”, or
“I was the thorns”
What if we held other signs said,
“Christ asked God to forgive me”,
“I didn’t understand”,
“I thought it was a white lie”,
or “Who is my neighbor”.
Would the moment be more clear
the words spoken through pain
the prayer Christ lifted up
why he hung dying
The stain of our sin upon him
preparing to enter darkness
on the gate of the cross
crying out to God to forgive us.
