Out in the bramble

Down the dusty, dirt road
out in the bramble
the fragrant moments of summer
the fruit in its season

Climbing into the brier
plucking each sweet berry
some crushed in my fingers
an excuse to eat

The difference of the texture
the sweetness of the fruit
the black raspberries and the red ones
ready for the pie

Bringing home the berries
culling the stems
the baking with the lattice top
waiting for the vanilla
a big dollop melting
on the still-hot slice
