Marcy

Pandora’s Box
Burst open a year ago today
Because you gave us an assignment
To read a poem.
I took a risk.
And was rewarded
Beyond measure.

A silent voice
Spoke for the first time
Clear and strong and with something to share
Of beauty, of imagery, of strong emotion
Words pouring out
Through a crack in the dam
Of my heart
Wanting to be heard and seen
Hoping to touch others as
They feel what I reveal,
Free to be
Who I am

New sensations of
Pure emotions
Finding form and shape
On the printed page,
Letting me breath new air
Learning to live.

Salmon Skin

A pause on the bridge, a break in my day, as night came
A stop to drink in the murmur, the echo, pulsed from the fountain
Across the stillness of the water, pushing toward me
The salmon surface of the water drank in the rippling reflections of the reeds.
Like tethered monochrome wrapping ribbon, undulating on the skin
A momentary scene, lost to the darkening, an instant later

Another circuit of the park, quiet pulling me in
Separating from the memory of the bustle at the pool
Earlier this day, when the sun reigned
Peace among the doubt of the studying,
Learning on the fly, in summary,
Keeping me at the school, that drives me to the pond, to start with

Losing myself, in the tranquility of the water’s motion
The connectedness of the sky, its echo in the salmon skin
And its hold on me, soothing my soul
Lost in my solitary march, exercise and rejuvenation
Around the water, in the park, across from the school
My instant sanctuary, nurturing and reminding, of more

Force Majeure*

You loosed the whirlwinds
That day in June
Setting two settled souls
Off their pilings

Forced to face our realities
And our fears
Living outside comfort
Risking everything

Overwhelmed still by uncertainty
Adrift with the floodwaters
Hoping to land and germinate
On fertile soil

New life with you
All I dream of,
All I pray for
Each time Sleep stalks me

Tears

My eyes welled up
Tears rolled down my cheeks
As the choir sang
Of God’s Love and His forgiveness
Vision blurred for a few moments
So I could but see
Unburdening my heart
In your house this Sunday

You are not finished with me.
You have saved me
For what I know not yet
I pray you will steel my heart
And guide my hands and feet
To do your work.

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for this day
And your promise
Paid with your body
For all of us

Crosswalk

Iterative, coding conventions
Six month of our lives
Spent casting and recasting
The structure of the new environment
To bring forward history
And meet the new paradigm
Of an Org-centric model

Overhead and spreadsheets
Whiteboard and Picturetel
To reach consensus
On ever narrowing issues

Fund and Org and Activity
Oh, don’t forget Account
Characters with meaning
Numbers and letters
Six characters and
How many levels
For each

Links hard and soft
Moving before our eyes
Why does that link there now?
Freeze date oh thank God
You are near (or here).

About crosswalking the old accounting system to the new accounting system's nomenclature, back in spring 2001 (part of why I went to law school).

Idiots

Feeble knats
Buzzing in my classroom
Inane questions
Blank looks
On doe-like faces
Frozen in time
By my knowledge
Unable to perceive
The law, the truth
The power of the words
I impart.

Glassworks

Mesmerized, watching
The skill, artistry
Effortlessness in the heat
Of the sweating craftsmen
In the beach air
On the Vineyard

Living,
Molten glass, clear
Droop on the shaft
Entering the
Orange maw
Mouth of the furnace

Glow yellow
from the warming
Glistening wet
Grow with the blow
Liquid and free

Spin and catch
Supple flesh
Add color and form
Enter again
Translucence now
Hot gases
Fill the space
Wipe brow
Enter again

Cool and gel
Cut from the pipe
Clutched like a robin’s egg
By a toddler’s wonder
Placed to firm and harden
Into permanent wonder

about Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks
somewhere I spent hours,
over many summers in the 1990’s watching bowls,
pitchers, pictures, and more, come to life.

April Violet

A new bloom
frilly and pink
between the rich and green
grafted and grown by your hands
warmed in the sun
given to me
gone but remembered
preserved in resin,
and memory

6/4/04 20:50 – About a special new breed of violet that my paternal grandmother, Jessie Foss, gave me when I was a pre-teen. I preserved the bloom in resin, which cracked because of the moisture in it.

Bar

Reexamination of law
Forgotten,
Pulling tendrils of memory
to the front
to be ready
to answer the test

New law
Bar Prep
Paths not taken
requiring more work
new learning
on video

Application
Memory test
Of factoids
of my life
over time
and in detail

Wait
Not ready
Courses/ assignments undone
before the end
before I’m ready
to sprint to the finish

Strand

A glint of gossamer
Single strand,
Bowed in the wind
Tethered to branch and bench
Undulating, snapping
Refracting when still
A line, catching the eye
Breaking the scene
Like a cracked window
Bending in the breeze

Gage

Little man
Newly five years old
Devil in your blue eyes,
Sly smile and infectious laugh
Sharing candy with me,
But not too many,
Made me happy
Made me laugh.

Watching you grow
Playing demolition derby
Or kickball with you and
Your shorts, tank top, and winter boots

How I see your dad and mom
In you and your sister
Friend and tormentor
Each to the other
Happy playing together
And testing the other –
Punch, hug, kick, and laugh.
Hey, Can I have some gum?!?

Diana

Perched and posed
for viewing
in your shop
smooth and feminine
cool metal and shine

Bow and breast
subtle calf
command the room
draw the eye
from Lincoln and
coin

Anniversary

An anniversary
Of a moment
(if many hours can be but a moment)
When pain brought a common numbing
A shock, pride, and resolve
Smoking buildings
Bombed caves
A world away

Fifth-five year before
In the midst of Pearl Harbor,
A prescient son of Nippon postulated -
A sleeping bear awoked
By a sudden attack,
Again from the air
That forever changed our innocence
The fallibility of our sense
Of safety within our shores
That danger is out there, over there, not here
By hostile hands.

Like squabbling siblings
United against the town’s bully
Who chose one of their own
A nation together
Rallying ‘round the flag
Terrorists beware
We will not forget this anniversary
And you don’t deserve flowers.
Unless you want lilies.

Accrue

To accrue, or not to accrue
That is the question,
Whether to recognize the income
The deduction, now,
Or on receipt, payment,
Or rather cash
Constructive or otherwise
Falls to my ledger
Enriching me
In Year 1 or 2
