held him to the cross
only his grace
released us from our chains

God alone,
redeeming us from the pit
giving us wings
that we may live with him

Only his love
set me free from sin
only his love
held him to the tree

God’s presence greatest
when we still ourselves
humbly, waiting
waiting for him

In the still silence
not in the rushing wind
the earthquake, the fire
the endless dim

In the still silence
that is where we find God
waiting to teach us

In Service, Peace

Aware of my weakness
my failings in this life
feeling his presence
walking with my God

Spending time in silence
prayer out loud to him
in knowing my feet of clay
and what he gave to me

Wanting to give back
to offer what I have
to share the love of God
with everyone I meet

Trying to live out
the words he has for us
to give of the gifts we have
to lift our neighbor up

In the doing of the work
in the using of our hands
in offering the word of God
the grace we barely understand

A glimpse of the divine
a sense of greater peace
when we lift our neighbor up and
when we fall to our knees

Alone with God

On the mountain top
in the quiet of our room
wherever we can be close
set apart, away from the noise
needing to find that place
where we can be alone with God

Needing renewal
in time set apart
to commune with God
to sit at his feet
humble, in quiet

A world full of noise

The truth of her words
hard to find peace
to find moments of silence
to be quiet within
in a world full of noise

Needing to still ourselves
in spite of the chaos
to be patient, expectant
to wait in silence
for the voice of the Lord

He will answer
out of the silence
his voice still speaking
even to us

We can be sure
knowing our Maker
the one who has taught us
how to truly live

Nails of His Love

The love of our Savior
come down from heaven
the nails of his love
held him to the cross

Not the nails
driven by humans
held the Messiah
to the frame of the tree

Only God’s love
sending the Son
only his submission
becoming the one

The one priest, holy
able to offer
one offering for us
to heal us for all time

Bound for heaven
seated in glory
submit to the Father
turning over our will

Give to the Lord
as did our Savior
our path secure
when we follow our Lord

Not Human Nails

Not human nails
driven in his hands
not human hands
that lifted him up
the tree of the cross
a choice alone
He chose to go
to carry our load

To be the sacrifice
the humble lamb of God
to go where he was led
to become the cornerstone
to rise up on the wood
the thorns on his head
to go the cross
in our place instead

Only Christ’s love
choosing to go
to bear our pain
because he loves us so

Only Christ’s Love

Only Christ’s love
held him to the cross
the power to choose
to save us from lost

He went to the cross
because he loves us so
choosing to die
not to leave us below

From the pit we rise
on wings he gives us
redeeming us from death
like eagles we fly

Only God’s love
brought him to the earth
only by his choice
do we have our new birth

He did not have to do this
Christ did not have to die
he chose to submit
to go to the cross
The lamb of God
the servant of the king
by going to the grave
He gave us wings

In some sense the statement true
Christ had to die
to set us free
unable by ourselves
to change from the world
the path of the pit
of the way to hell
needing his grace
to rise again
to live in glory
at the ends of our days
Christ had to die
that we may live

Wisdom in Their Decisions

Knowing the times we live in
the groundswell of frustration
the distance of the government
seemingly, from our day to day

The frustration leading
to sometimes hard decisions
choice of where to cut
to believe the anecdotes

A prayer in the congregation
offering up a petition
wisdom in their decisions
guided by our calling

To love our neighbor
as we love ourselves
to care for the ones in need
the least, the last, the lost

That they would be guided
wisdom in their decision
caring for our fellow man
as did the one we follow
the one who became our sacrifice
and paid the price for us

Tearing the Fabric

The choices being made
to cut services
for the poor, the disabled
the aged, our family

Tearing the fabric
our connection together
compartmentalizing
the people we should hold dear

The cost to these families
real, concrete
a mother crying
for you to truly hear

What will this do
to the fabric of community
if we save ourselves some pain

If this were your child, your sister, your mother

Think about these people
the ones they care for
the stories they are telling
their crying out

Not as strangers
as members of your family
changing the names
to the loved ones in your life

If this were your child,
your sister, your mother
would you make the same choices
for those who would share your table

Would you cut the services
would you trim that budget
if the person you were hurting
were in your family

For we are one people together
in covenant relation
the social contract breaking
right before our eyes

Yes we are our brother’s keeper
the ones they count on
to live in freedom
sometimes just to survive

The choices easy
when they are merely strangers
numbers on a page
costing the State money

But what if this is your child,
your sister, your mother
would you forgo new taxes
at the cost of their lives
