Woe to the Rich Men

Woe to the rich men
sitting fat and happy
full barns, aplenty
more cars and trinkets

multiple homes, mansions
adding another wing
life of excess, forfeit
when judgment comes

Woe to the rich men
fools in the eyes of God
hoarding their wealth, greedy
not sharing with their fellow man

Giving the abundance away – v2

not hoarding our wealth
the bounty of the Lord
into full barns, excess
loving too much our possessions
an indictment on our lives
in the ledger of God

giving away our abundance
the path to holiness
seeking to share with our neighbor
even of the nadir of our wealth
trusting God to provide
giving away the rest

Full Barns

A new house, a new car
wealth in the bank
ostentatious living
letting it all hand out

Full barns of the rich man
rewards here on earth
but what of the ledger in heaven
the book of his life

Full barns but an empty heart
thinking of himself
the indictment of the rich man
an accounting bound for hell

the Profane made Holy

God transforming evil
the profane made holy
that detestable thing, a snake,
the source of their healing
lifted high upon the tree
raising their eyes toward heaven
evil metamorphosed, transfigured,
to bring about their healing

an unpopular menu

Complaining about the food
an unpopular menu
the people crying out to God
questioning the creator
snakes for a response
biting them, killing
a bronze snake, detestable
to heal their wickedness, rebellion
to tame their evil tongues
questioning the redeemer
who freed them from their chains
not trusting in maker
to provide for his wayward children
wandering in the desert
questioning the hand of God

That detestable thing

To be forced to look up
a punishment for sin,
for disobedience
to look up at that detestable thing
a snake made of bronze
Humbling the wayward people
complaining in the desert
challenging the will of God
doubting in his provision
a snake, the serpent
which cast man out of the garden
a reminder of the power of God
to these his wayward children

Christ drove all of them out of the temple

Quite a disturbance, never before
all eyes upon him, hanging on each word
Christ shouting, “Get Out!”, at the top of his lungs
a whip of cords to chase them
the sacrificial animals, the money changers
all of the sellers, the merchant
Christ drove all of them out of the temple
the zeal of his love, an anguish at their actions
turning the temple into a market
driving them out, for the Father’s glory

overturned their tables

Chaos in the morning
the animals running
the bedlam of that moment
Christ in the temple
the coins in the air
rolling on the ground
overturning their tables
casting out the money changers
positioned in the temple
shouting at their presence
in the house of God

A moment of rage

This was singular
a moment of rage
Christ fully human
clearing the page
the Temple a market
money changing hands
unbalanced scales
the animals, the chaos
a house of prayer
because a den of thieves
desecrating the temple
the dwelling place of God

You think you can silence me
but you have no power
no control over me
in this appointed hour
I have authority
given by God
You may pierce this body
you may destroy this temple
but I will raise it up
I will rise from the grave

destroy this temple

Invisible Children – v2

Our world becoming aware
coming alive, a viral nation
one people, without borders
a wellspring, a wave, tsunami
a truth urgent, undeniable

to stop the killing, genocide
by awakening from slumber, complacent
the world will be watching, real-time
to end the horror, the violence

not national interest, freedom
but the waking of the world
to change the whole earth, afire
to end the violence, ignored

to save these children, Uganda
because it is right, moral
no more bloodshed, war
hope in our sights, justice

Their coins poured out

Their tables overturned
their coins poured out
the money changers in God’s Temple
facing the wrath of Christ

Anger at the marketplace
the carnival in the Temple
God’s house become a place of thieves
robbing the faithful, the people

A whips of cord, a holy fire
casting the animals out
Christ in this moment
showing his human side

Zeal for his Father’s house
passion for the sanctuary
to keep this place holy
for the presence of God

Exotic Animals

Exotic animals
foreign to us
resplendent winged creatures
amazing water features
life worth living
walking with Him
in the King’s walled garden
Paradise waiting
for all who believe.

The King's walled garden

Beyond our grasp
our loss of paradise
of the garden, Eden
relations taken away from us
the sin in that garden
cast out by the King
because of our rebellion

The King’s walled garden
now opened to us
restored by our Savior
his sacrifice for us
bringing us from the pit
our sin, our death
redeemed by the cross,
To walk in paradise

Invisible Children

A world becoming aware
coming alive, viral
a wellspring, a wave
a truth undeniable

to stop the killing
by awakening from slumber
the world will be watching
to end the horror

not national interest
but the waking of the world
to change the whole earth
to end the violence

to save these children
because it is right
no more bloodshed
hope in our sights

A walled garden

An image of paradise
of ancient Persia
a beautiful walled garden
with extravagant feature
waters flowing
streets paved with gold
exotic animals, birds
treasure to behold

Walking in the garden
Paradise, with God
restored by our Savior
at home in the Lord
the promise of salvation
of a life with Him
redeemed by the Messiah
our life now begins

Christ brought us back to the garden

God healed the breach
the loss of our innocence
Christ brought us back
to the garden with God

Christ by his grace
his life on the cross
redeemed us from death
when he paid the awful cost

why did you bring us out of Egypt

The lament of an ungrateful nation
a freed people yet crying out
what must God have felt in heaven
the Passover still fresh in his memory
his freeing of his people
freed from oppression
saved from his wrath
yet moaning in the desert
“why did you bring us out of Egypt”
they cried to the heavens
doubting God’s provision
right from the beginning

yet complaining in the desert
ungrateful, arguing against God

righteous before the Lord

Sermon,"Laws for a Lawless World", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, March 11, 2012

March 11, 2012
Third Sunday of Lent
Worship Theme: Meeting the Demands of the Law
Exodus 10:1-17 NRSV Bible
1 Corinthians 1:22-25 NRSV Bible
John 2:13-22 NRSV Bible

“Laws for a Lawless World”

Kids are great. I love being a parent and watching the girls grow up and they’re growing up real fast. And as parents, Ray and I only want what is best for them. We want to keep them safe. We want to keep them from harm. We set rules for them to keep them safe. When they grow up they are going to have to live by the rules set by the authorities of the world so this is kind of a training ground for them. Living at home is like a “training ground” for them before they are set free on society.

But there are days when I just sit back and say to myself “Really?!” They decided to break the rules and don’t understand why they are being punished for it. There are even days when they don’t understand why thee even have to be rules. Why can’t they just “run amuck” through the house? And of course there are those times when someone gets hurt or something gets broke and when asked if they broke the rules and the say “yes”. . . they know there are rules but they break them anyway. But I guess that’s just human nature because I think most of humanity breaks the rules of society from time to time. You know. . . we are running late and drive faster than the speed limit and end up getting a ticket. We decide to get in the 12 items or less line with 20 items much to the dismay of the people behind us. . .

Rules and laws have been around for a very long time. Most are there to keep us safe. But there are times when the laws of the world have been not so just. Laws that keep people from receiving the rights they deserve. . . laws that make other humans property of another. . . laws that oppress the poor. These types of laws are unfair and need to be changed. But don’t get me wrong. . . humanity has made some changes but it still has a long way to go.

I think the only “laws” that originally had all people in mind are the laws that God set before humanity. These laws were for all of humanity’s sake. As we heard this morning from the Old Testament reading, God’s laws were for all people, even those who were salves and foreigners in the midst of the Israelites. But it was difficult for the people to keep them. And unfortunately, even today these life given laws are twisted to what society would have them be. . . or what the elite of Christianity would have them say. . . taken out of context in order to meet the needs of those in charge and not the needs of all of God’s children. What a shame.

Even the “elite” of Jesus’ day took advantage of the laws God had set forth. They took advantage of others through the laws. What a shame. But. . . let’s hear what Jesus had to say about what they did. We will be reading the Gospel of John chapter 2 verses 13-22. It is found on page 967 and 968 in the pew bible. I like this story. . . it shows Jesus’ human side. . .

Really! These “men of God” were taking advantage of these poor people. They were supposed to be teaching them about the laws and were breaking them themselves. . . Thou shall not covet. . . thou shall not steal. . . how about, thou shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain or even Thou shall not make for yourself false idols. . .

Being human is hard to keep the laws, either of this world or of God’s world. So. . . where do we turn? How are we able to do the right thing? How can we be made right with God? Well the answer, God’s answer, is found in the 1 Corinthians scripture from this morning. The answer if found in the wisdom. . . remember the foolishness of God’s wisdom. . . of the cross. It is through the cross we are redeemed. . . it is through the cross we find wisdom. The law was fulfilled on and through the Cross.

On the cross the Old covenant and new covenant come together †. . . it is the sign of our salvation. It is within this sign we find strength, it is within this sign we find hope, it is within this sign we are able to be made right. Within this sign is Christ. Through Christ, we are more than conquerors. We are set free to follow Christ and His teachings. We are set free to follow the way of the cross. We are set free from the penalty of sin and death. We are set free to be ambassadors of love. . . of hope. . . of peace. We are set free to live in a lawless world with the law of God within our hearts. . . On the cross. . . Christ paid the price for our disobedience and fulfilled the Law for us. The only answer for humanity’s breaking of the commandment was for someone to obey all the laws for us. God’s answer was to come down and get involved with humanity again. . . to walk again with His creation. . . to teach, first hand, what was needed. . . then show how much love He had for them by taking on their sins so that they may live.

What wondrous love is this that our God would do such a thing for you and for me? My question is this. . . when was the last time you or I thanked God for this gift? When was the last time that you or I really pondered the cross and all that it means? When was the last time you or I visited the cross of Calvary? Lent is a season of reflection and renewal. My prayer is that we all would come away from the journey to the cross changed, renewed and revived. . . that we would meet Jesus on the road in ways that we never imagined. . . and that the love of the cross would flow from it onto you and me, through us, within us and out of us on to the world in which we live. Come to the cross of love and hope, of peace and strength and leave a changed person for it. Jesus is waiting to share the law of love. Don’t wait until the “perfect time” there is no time like the present. He is waiting there with open arms for you and for me. The admission price has been paid. Will you redeem your ticket or will it sit on the shelf for a rainy day?

Amen. . .

Even unto Death

Precious hours,
a few remaining moments
Christ hanging on the cross
yet still praying for us
that none would be lost
That God would forgive
that He would restore
even unto death
seeking to save the lost
to bring us back to God
to heal our brokenness
the thieves, the criminals
the last to receive this blessing
one dying in his sin, pointless
the other rising to the garden, paradise
God still working through Jesus
even there on the cross

Christ’s mission statement

To heal those who were broken
to redeem those who were lost
even while he was dying
his body on the cross
Christ’s mission statement,
his purpose, his walk
his time in this life
never wavering, purpose
his walk here with us

The disciples remembered

After he had risen
ascended unto God
the disciples remembered
the words Christ had spoken
the challenge of the leaders
when he cast them out
the money changers, the merchants
the animals out of the Temple
their challenge to him
by what authority
his challenge to destroy the temple
the body of Christ
how he would lift it up
on the third day
the words of Christ
spoken before the cross
clear in the memory
of that mighty cost

stopping his creation

making this day holy
set apart, to be mindful
stopping our own effort

May our lives be joyful
let us worship
before our Creator, our God
may we shout to the heavens
may the earth join the song
praising our one God
all the day long

sugar to my lips
faithful, reverence
the province of God
holy for us, a purpose
our Lord over all.

what love truly means

the Savior, a servant
washing away our sin
bringing us to God
in Him do we live

The rooster, the symbol
the denial of Peter
denying the Christ
when it really mattered
not standing up
proud of our Savior
what he has taught us
the love of God
poured down on us

humanly impossible
a baby in their old age
fruits of a barren couple
a reward for faithfulness
a covenant relation
walking with our God
ever walking before Him

hurled upon him
shouted even still

Destroy and I will Raise

You think you have power
to destroy, to silence
to kill me, a mortal

I say this is nothing
I have authority, power
from my Father, the Lord

I will raise up
from the dead, eternal
a new life in God

Only at harvesttime

Only at harvesttime
the tares from the wheat
fed by the same soil
each planted in our hearts

Some for the fire
others to be gathered in
the seed of the kingdom
the wheat planted by God

God sows good seed

God sows good seed
the word of God holy
good seed for the soil
the fields of our hearts
none yet truly worthy
The germ of God
his good seed
planted within
yet competing with weeds
bad seed of the world
that too planted within
to lead us from our God
Only at harvest
when we are mature
ready for the gleaning
the gathering unto God
the weeds to the fire
the good fruits to the garner
wheat of the field
a harvest for the Lord

Taking up my cross

Real sacrifice, passion
the risk of persecution
taking up my cross
truly following Jesus
not something easy, jewelry
a sacrifice, a turning
a turning of our lives over
focused on the Lord
his holy message
a guiding of our hearts
leading unto glory

Whoever acknowledges me before men

A reward in heaven
a name read in the gate
in the courts of God by Jesus
for whoever acknowledges
who proclaims his holy name
those who claim him in the gate
in the dwelling place of man
those who know Christ here below
a reward in highest heaven

From the fitful sleep of death

Christ Jesus, my Lord and my Savior
raise me from the dead
from the throws of fitful sleep
the death of my spirit
lost for so many years
the pit of my transgressions
touch me, heal me,
make me whole once more
raise me from the dead
I want to be restored.

Jesus went with him

How could he not
if he had compassion
in the face of such faith
the father’s plea to him
to raise his now dead daughter
Jesus went with him
to her bedside
his touch raised her;
She was alive!

Your touch will raise her

The father’s faith complete
coming to Lord Jesus
his pain immense
his daughter had just died

Come with me Jesus
your touch will raise her
I know you can raise the dead
I know this in my heart

A sign of his authority

Christ’s words of challenge
the temple of his body
the leaders to destroy
that he would raise up

A sign of his authority
these words at the beginning
remembered, in reverence
after he returned to glory

Destroy this temple, this body

His answer to their challenge
his proof of his authority
a challenge to take his life
to destroy this temple
his vessel of God
He would raise it up
all power in him
to rise from the dead
to make us to live

Zeal for our Father's house

for the sanctuary to be holy
zeal for our Father’s house
a place set apart
never to be a market

Holy, sacred ground
consecrated for worship
here unto you
do we gather to sing your praises

From the pit of slavery

God, my redeemer
returning me to life
from the pit of slavery
to sin, unto death
healing me completely
raising me up
upon the rock
secure in my God
