Worship theme: Worship

Luke 4:5-8 the Message Bible

Worship. . . It Does A Body Good

I love Sunday mornings. I love to be here in church where my Spirit can join together with other Spirits and worship God. It is such a good feeling for me. I can feel the Spirit of God within me almost leaping for joy! I don’t know about you but there is nowhere else on earth that I would want to be.

Today we are leaving port to start our cruise of the Sacred Waters of our Faith. The first stop we will be making is in the port of Worship. This is one of the ports that our Risen Lord Jesus Christ is found. He is the captain of our boat. . . our journey of faith and this is a very important port of His. It what makes us who we are. . . God worshipers. . . thankful for all He has done. . . all He is doing. . . and all that is yet to be. Let’s hear a little more about this port we have docked at and why it is so important. What is worship anyway and why do we do it?

In the 2 Samuel from this morning, we heard that God blesses those who worship Him. Obed-Edom prospered when he had the Ark. . . the Chest of God. . . with him. David wanted that blessing on his house so he went to bring the Ark to his home. As e brought the chest up, the whole country celebrated. . . worshipped the Living God. . . they more than likely were thinking about how God had brought them up out of Egypt into a new land. . . as they traveled. David was unafraid to worship God with all his might. David lived his worship out loud and didn’t care who was around. . . much to the dismay of his wife Michal. . .

From the Hebrews Scripture, we can gather that God gives those who worship Him an unshakable kingdom. . . the kingdom of God. We can worship God and be thankful. We have a promise, a gift, of and unshakeable kingdom that he establishes. Even thought the world around us may be falling apart. . . we have this hope. . . we are not part of this world but only in it for a time to fulfill God’s purpose in our lives. Our real home. . . our real citizenship. . . is with god and his unshakable kingdom. This promise alone makes me want to worship and thank God even more. . . and it’s not just on Sunday but every day He has given me.

God wants us to worship only Him. Let’s hear what the bible says about this in Luke chapter 4 verses 5-8. . . I am reading from the message Bible this morning. . .

Satan tried to coerce Jesus into worshipping him. He promised to give Jesus the whole world (as if he really could) if He would only just worship him. Jesus knew the answer. . . the right answer. . . to that “gift”. “No thanks. . . I’m all set.” Jesus shows us that God wants us to worship and serve only Him. Not our homes, our jobs, our friends. . . even our pastors. . . only Him.

Worship is the human response to God’s goodness and mercy. It is something that we can be thankful for with each and every breath we take. It is our response to the overture. . . the music. . . the symphony. . . the dance. . . of love that comes from the heart of God for you and for me.

We can use all the right words, the right phrases, the right music but still miss the mark. Singing, praying and praising may lead us to worship but true worship comes from the heart. . . it our spirit ignited by the divine fire of God.

Worship is also not contained in only one form. There are many forms of worship but they all produce the same product. . . being thankfully in awe as we worship our Creator god. There are many roads to one place but the destination is the same. When we exclude others from our worship because they worship differently there is a riff in the fabric of our worship. We somehow have missed the mark.

As we live out our worship in our daily lives we do so not only because of who God is but also what God has done for us and well as what God has done in the lives of others. Have you ever heard someone’s story of their faith and just praised God for His goodness? Not because of what God has done in your life but for what was done for someone else. . . for humanity.
That is a form of worship and it does a body. . . and soul. . . good!

I have read some of Brother Lawrence’s writings and they are wonderful and make me stop and think of my own faith journey. He is a monk who practices living in the presence of God and has written about his experience in doing so. He wrote:”I cannot imagine how religious persons can live satisfied without the practice of the Presence of God.” He cannot imagine living a life that lives in the presence of God worshiping and thanking him with every action. . . with every breath.

We as Christians need to enter our worship time, on Sundays as well as living it out loud in our lives, expecting to meet God. God is there, waiting for us to only expect him to show up. We as Christians have a choice. We can either be like those religious people I talked about in my children’s message, living our worship in words only or we can live it out loud for the world to see and dance the dance with the abandonment of David. How will you chose? For me, I chose to worship with all my might and hope to be so contagious that everyone around me joins in the dance.
The dance that only our God and choreograph and we worship Him with all our Might.

Amen

sermon, "All Your Need Is Love", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, August 5, 2012

August 5, 2012
10th Sunday of Kingdomtide
Theme: Fellowship
Ecclesiastes 4:9-11 Common English Bible
1 John 4:7-11 Common English Bible
John 15: 12-17 Common English Bible

All You Need Is Love. . .

A reading from the Gospel of John, Chapter 15, verses 12-17 from the Common English Bible. Listen for a word, for you and me, from God. . .

Good morning. . . Well, we have had a wonderful morning this morning in God’s house. We have had a wonderful special music from Rachel this morning. . . we celebrated with Carol as she joined our church. . . and we will shortly be celebrating the Lord’s Table with each other. We are even gathering together after church to have a meal and celebrate our fellowship with one another. It’s a good day in the Lord. . . ! The Bible talks a lot about fellowship and the importance of it. We were made to be in fellowship from the very beginning. . . remember, God said “t is not good for man to be alone...” all the way back in the story of Creation. . . in the book of Genesis.

We are Cruising the Sacred waters of our faith this summer and what and adventure it has been. Last week. . . we talked about worship. . . about how there are different ways of worship. . . about how worship is the human response to God’s goodness and mercy. . . a response to the dance. . . the music of love that comes from the heart of God for you and for me. As we dance the dance of worship we come together. . . as a family. . . as our spirit within us unites with the spirit within others. . . in fellowship with each other. . . fellowship is vital for our walk and for our growth in faith. We learn from one another as we share our pilgrimage stories. . . We share our walk as we fellowship together.

Now you may say . . . ”Pastor Ruth, what is so important about fellowship? I’m all good by myself. . . I am happy just going to church on Sunday and seeing my friends there and going home to get ready for work and then come back next week (or in a couple of weeks) and do it again. Why do I need the fellowship of others?” Well, I am glad you asked that. Let’s see what the scripture from today reveals to us about fellowship. . . being a community together.

The scripture form Ecclesiastes tells us that two are better than one. When we live in fellowship. . . in community. . . with one another we are able to help each other stand strong in our faith. Each Sunday we gather as a faith community in faith. We share our concerns and celebration with each other and we raise our voices together as we pray. We help each other as we pray for one another and situations and we have all seen the miracles that have come out of our fellowship in prayer. We have all come up beside someone and helped them through a tough time. . . even if it is just a listening ear. They will know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes they will know we are Christians by our love. . .

Fellowship produces love. From the 1st John this morning, we heard that God is love and love is God and from God. As we begin to “get to know each other” through fellowship. . . truly fellowship. . . not just the surface stuff that looks good when you are around others but the deep down stuff that bonds us to one another. . . we begin to see each other with a different set of eyes. . . God’s eyes. . . the eyes of love. We begin to love just for the sheer joy of it. . . our walk becomes one with a “spring in our step” as we twirl and whirl our part in the dance with God and others. It’s all about love. . . it’s all about relationships. . . worship is not temporal but relational. . . as we worship and fellowship with God and each other a “cord is forged” that is not easily broken. They will know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes they will know we are Christians by our love. . .

When we Worship and fellowship with one another we, as the John 15 scripture states, becomes friends of Christ. . . not just a servant but truly friends. Our fellowship with one another helps us to come up beside those around us and work in ministry with one another. . . we want to work together for the kingdom of God. . . we want to be that ambassador for Christ in the world. . . as well as to those that we fellowship with. . . but the bottom line of this relational experience is love. . . without it, just isn’t going to happen. They will know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes they will know we are Christians by our love. . .

We are called. . . we are meant to be. . . we need to fellowship with one another. We need to learn with one another. We need to work in ministry with one another. We need to see each other through God’s eyes and not our own distorted vision. We need to seize every opportunity to be that unified body of Christ, serving, learning, growing with the help and guidance of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. How have you and I lived our faith out loud? Have we stepped up next to others to help or have we expected others to do it instead? Have we spent time with others, learning from each other or have we said “maybe tomorrow”? Have we become part of a Sunday community or are we part of a “Son” day community? Which will we chose as we cruise the sacred waters of our faith each day? Will the light of the world or the Light of the world be our guide? The choice is ours to make. . . which will you chose?

Amen

God I long to understand
your purpose for my life
how I am to serve
what I am to do

a discerning heart

a prayer in the night
the king in his sleep
such a prayer as this
the world had never seen
not for wealth, for fame
for riches of the earth
a prayer for a discerning heart
to lead God’s people
a prayer for wisdom
filled with holy fire

Sermon, "Dive Deep into His Word", by Erica Berberena, Suncook United Methodist Church, August 12, 2012

Sermon

“Dive in Deep into His Word”

During the week we have learned five different scriptures each day.

The First scripture we learned was Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Don’t rely on your own intelligence.” Deep inside the scriptures you would find what the scripture’s meaning. This scripture’s true meaning is that we must rely on God because only God knows everyone’s true worth and their meaning in life. Our Ocean Insight for this scripture was “Depend on God” (and the children shouted, “Dive In!”).

The Second scripture we learned was Matthew 22:39, “You must love your neighbor as yourself.” The meaning of this scripture is that you must love everyone since we are all God’s children in the world. The Ocean Insight for this scripture is “Dare to Care” (and the children shouted, “Dive In!”).

The Third scripture we learned was John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him won’t perish but have eternal life.” The meaning of this scripture is that God sent us his son to take away all our sin so we could live in heaven with God and Jesus. The Ocean Insight for this scripture is “Claim Jesus” (and the children shouted, “Dive In!”).

The Fourth scripture we learned was Joshua 24:15, “Choose today whom you will serve. . . but my family and I will follow the Lord.” This scripture means that people must choose between following God or the world. The Ocean Insight for this scripture is “Choose to Follow” (and the children shouted, “Dive In!).

The Final scripture we learned was Mark 16:15, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to every creature.” This scripture’s one true meaning is that we are to go out into the world and be Christ’s disciples and, by doing so, we can “change the world” (and the children shouted, “Dive In!”).

in that moment perfection

perfect in that moment
when we enter paradise
all of our past
sloughed off, left behind
in that moment
crossing over
our journey completed
ready for our sojourn
our walking in the garden
perfected by our master
held in his hand

not completed before death

we pray to be more worthy
but we will not be perfected
we will not be completed
before our death
our life a journey
from brokenness to healing
from sin to righteous
from death into life
only at our death
will we see clearly
only in the passage
from life into life
we then will see God as he is
as we ourselves are
perfect in that moment
when we enter paradise

at the end

seeing clearly
reaching perfection
the journey at the end
at the end of this walk
only then will we know
when we see Jesus
only then will we be perfect
able to see clearly
not completed before death
moving to completion
the journey we walk
to the end of our days

what our eyes don’t believe

not having eyes of faith,
what our eyes don’t believe,
the rest of the story,
our keys to the kingdom
like the neighbors of Christ
unable to believe him
that he was revealing
God standing before them
bound by their eyes
what they thought they saw
unwilling, unable
to believe at all

Their eyes lying

in the dust, blind
their eyes lying
unable to see Jesus
God standing with them
bound by the past
because they had seen him
unable to see who he was
the Messiah come to say them

nothing but the boy
the one among them
the son of Joseph,
of that family
not seeing anything else
certainly not a prophet
blind because of their eyes
only seeing what was before them

Let them eat of this bread

Lord, break me for them
let me be used
let them eat of this bread
the sharing of your word
Let me be broken
given up to God
offered as a message
light to your world

broken in his hands

the disciples sharing
the bread which Christ broke
truly themselves
a gift to the world
hope in the breaking
in the giving unto God
our bodies, our wills
broken in his hands
given to the world
according to God’s plan
hope in the sharing
in the giving of ourselves

he broke you

He took you
the Savior, into his hands,
he blessed you
lifting you up to God
he broke you
if you will give yourself to him
and he gave it to them
and they all ate
of the bread of life
the holy message
our purpose in this time
he broke you and gave you
and they all were fed

raw materials

we are worthy
to do our work
though others may see dust
things of this earth

raw material only
we are yet worthy
for our Savior’s work
answering our calling

How wrong they were

the timid disciples
looking at the dust
the multitude before them
wanting to be fed
hungry for the word
for the truth in Christ
needing to be fed
for this life and the next
how wrong they were
that they had nothing to give them
bound in the dust
in the perspective of the world
they were the fish,
the barley loaves
blessed and broken
given to the world

Bread in the hands of the pastor

The disciples not seeing deeper
the inner message, revealed
that they were to be given to the people
that their hunger would be fed
Bread in the hands of the pastor
the lamb, the shepherd, in life
raising the loves before them
to feed the multitude in need
They were the ones transformed
though the bread may have been multiplied
given as feed for their spirits
that the whole world would be fed

Broken for them

The disciples transformed
to feed the people
each of us in turn
given for a purpose

Becoming the barley loaves
the fishes of the youngster
food for their spirits
that the people would be fed

God lifts us up
gifts for a season
for our purpose in life
to feed his hungry people

We are broken for them
if, like Christ, we are submissive
placed in the potter’s hand
broken for his purpose

Our bodies their food

The story deeper
with meaning for our time
for we are the barley loaves
the fishes that day

Raised up by the Savior
by our teacher that day
blessed and broken for them
food for their spirits

Our bodies their food
for the multitude gathered
hungry for God’s word
for eternal life

We are the barley loaves
the meager fare, the fishes
offered up to God
broken for the people
