convicting his life

the song of your presence

our hymn of life
the song of your presence
a psalm imparted
welling up within
a light abiding
the song of your presence
life affirming, rejoicing

life taken from him
still, no longer breathing
breath back within him
refreshed by God
God changing clay
inert, without life
breath back within him
a prayer he would live

Pulled from the ground
like dandelion, like kudzu
roots planted deep
in your rich soil
more yet remaining
part of me forever
my memory, my past
part of my future before me

Pulled from the Ground

pulled from the ground
the place we had known
the roots of our lives
buried in the ground
pulled from the earth
transplanted, planted
in new soil, welcome
may we be fed and watered
may our roots be anchored
deep in the soil
the roots entwined
pulled from the ground

Feed My Sheep – v4

“Follow me; feed my sheep,”
spoke the Master to the Rock
preparing him for leadership, the church
a sheep made a shepherd, the seed planted
to germinate within him
until the seed began to bear fruit

After the flames ignited his fire
gave him voice that Pentecost
after the cloistering, the separation
of the apostles, the first on the way
hidden, timid, waiting for that day

These were Christ’s words, affirming in threes,
that it was his responsibility, three times
just as was his denial, that night after the garden
when the twelve followers ran
fell away from the Master

These were the words,
spoken in reconciliation, painful,
the admonition and response,
Christ speaking to Peter:
“Follow me; feed my sheep.”
“Yes Lord, I will.”

wooing the symphony

suddenly aware
hearing the words, the libretto
as if an opera
or some long Russian novel

a melody emerging
within the words, the stones
wooing the symphony
the story unknown

the rising and falling
the crescendo, the passion
the joy within the stones
a story all their own

coaxing the story
the novel, the romance
the dance within the pages
the mystery revealed

wooing the symphony
the beginning notes only
more to be written
in their whole lives unfolding

each a work of art

each a work of art

beginning to read the pages
the specialized instruction
the plans for each one
to unlock the mystery
to reach their potential
the jewels within the stones

lives bursting to shine
reading the pages
the words of success
the aspirations of their parents
and for us just the same

describing only in part
the young lives I am touching
none of them a blank slate
with history, emotion
each a living painting
adding hue and color

layer upon layer
as each grows into the person
they are meant to be
adding what we can
setting them free

hidden sculptures
within the stones
the layers, history
each one beautiful
waiting to emerge
to burst forth

within the stones
hidden treasure
each one a work of art
yearning to break free
to stand on their own feet

Making the secular Holy – v2

We married in the cold
under a snowy sky;
Yes, we professed our love
our faith out loud before our God

But the ceremony incomplete
needing too the church wedding
the moment when we stood
before our congregation in your temple

Making the secular Holy
the imprimatur of faith
standing in that community
feeling the gift of grace

I weep for my brothers, for sisters
who cannot know this joy
making the secular Holy
standing before the Lord

“Making the secular Holy – v2”
new poem September 7, 2013
“Making the secular Holy”
----
This poem is about my wife and me when we got married
in a civil service on December 17, 2004 in Concord, NH in White Park
and then before our church family at
Wesley United Methodist Church in Concord, NH
on April 23, 2005.
----
We celebrate 2 anniversaries because they both mean a great
deal to us, in very different ways.
I grieve for those who are able to marry civilly in so many
states now, such as NH, but are unable to marry in their
United Methodists churches and for the clergy who are put on trial
for choosing to go against the Discipline to marry them.
