A Different Fig Tree

A different messiah
without armies or power
came to be planted
in the soil of the owner
given love and care
by the gardener
who served the owners
of the land, the land
given by the gardener
Impatient for change
ready to give up
to cut down
to cast off
the humble
fruitless
tree
Reprieve
only temporary
before the roots were cut
with the ax, the nails, the thorns, the crown
the cross on the hill, at the end of
the temporary reprieve
because the owners
were impatient
and they
wanted
instant
fruit
