A Phoenix Pine

Rising from the ashes
the decaying stump
rich with moss
a tree to supplant
its forebear’s life run out
in the moist wood
living carcass, deep roots
remaining where it stood
for so many ages
bringing life to another
of its species, its kind
to stand in its place
in this spot in the wood
anchored once more
by deep roots, entwined
with the older, nurturing
roots of its ancestor.
