for generations, for centuries
the stump lay dormant
seemingly dead
to outside observers
But God's promise
to Isaiah, to Israel
was living still
in the stump of Jesse
waiting to sprout
to grow, fulfill
promises of old
to heal the people
to bring hope
and everlasting peace
