Matched Stones

They once were even
matched to one another
the stones in their season
placed just so

Now lichen covered
years or wind and rain
snow and ice in their season
seeking to chip away

The rough-hewn granite
gathered from the fields
placed just so in another season
falling in this time

Needing hands
to lift the stones
matching them together
once more with a purpose
to be the measuring line
