We turned out backs on them

We have splashed mud on them
safe in our cars, driving by
rushing to nowhere special
ignoring their cries
we have turned out backs on them
left there in the cold
those who are poor
left out, alone
we have cursed them
found them inconvenient
sharing our busy worlds
out in the street
we have ridiculed
their tattered mismatched clothes
we have turned away
when we should have reached out
comforting their spirits
offering them Christ
the source of our strength
for we too are fallen
unworthy of God’s love
