Yesterday…Today…Tomorrow
The Lord be with you…
And also with you…
Let us pray… prayer of thanksgiving
and for the Spirits leading and that God would be heard through me or in-spite
of me…
Good Morning. Well we are at the doorway of
a new season getting ready to step through into a new adventure…the Advent-ure
of Advent, as we remember and celebrate the birth of a King. How appropriate it
is that the Sunday before advent is called “Christ the King Sunday”. A Mighty
King was born that first Christmas day…a Messiah for all peoples…A Savior. As a side…as I was writing about Christ as
King…my Pandora launched itself ad started to play “Revelation Song”…decided
not to turn that one off…
In
ancient times, the people were looking for a messiah. Merriam Webster tells us
that a messiah is:
a person who is expected
to save people from a very bad situation
Many
saw the king as the messiah, they wanted their king to save them from the tyranny
of their oppressor. They wanted to be set free from the enemy. But God knew
what they really needed to be set free. The people were looking for a small “m”
messiah but God knew they needed the big “M” type of a messiah…
the Messiah
Judaism : a king who will
be sent by God to save the Jews
Christianity : Jesus
Christ
From
the Luke passage this morning we can see some of the attributes of God’s
Messiah
1. salvation
for us, salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us— (vs
71)
2. to
show mercy, to enable us to serve him without fear in holiness and
righteousness before him all our days. (vs 72-74)
3. to
shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet
into the path of peace.” (vs 78-79)
Christ
truly is the King…the Messiah…of world.
So,
about this King we have. There is so many pieces of scripture that talks about
God’s servant. But what about this King of kings? We know Him as Savior, but do
we really know Him as King? Daniel tells us of this King that we celebrate
today…
Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 The
Voice (VOICE)
9 As I watched the vision unfold,
thrones were set in place,
And the Ancient of Days took His throne above all.
His clothes were the purest white, as white as snow,
and the hair of His head was like the finest wool.
His throne was a flaming fire,
set on wheels that blazed like the sun.
10 A stream of fire emerged and flowed from His presence.
Thousands upon thousands of heavenly beings were there to serve Him;
millions upon millions stood by to attend Him.
The heavenly court sat to hear a case,
and the books of judgment were opened.
thrones were set in place,
And the Ancient of Days took His throne above all.
His clothes were the purest white, as white as snow,
and the hair of His head was like the finest wool.
His throne was a flaming fire,
set on wheels that blazed like the sun.
10 A stream of fire emerged and flowed from His presence.
Thousands upon thousands of heavenly beings were there to serve Him;
millions upon millions stood by to attend Him.
The heavenly court sat to hear a case,
and the books of judgment were opened.
13 I saw another spectacle in the night
visions:
I looked and saw someone like a son of man
coming with the clouds of heaven.[a]
He approached the Ancient of Days
and was ushered into His presence.
14 To Him was given authority, honor, and a kingdom
so that all people of every heritage, nationality, and language might serve Him.
His dominion will last forever,
His throne will never pass away,
and His kingdom will never be destroyed.
I looked and saw someone like a son of man
coming with the clouds of heaven.[a]
He approached the Ancient of Days
and was ushered into His presence.
14 To Him was given authority, honor, and a kingdom
so that all people of every heritage, nationality, and language might serve Him.
His dominion will last forever,
His throne will never pass away,
and His kingdom will never be destroyed.
Our
King is the same yesterday, today and will be tomorrow. He is enthroned on high
and every knee shall bow, and tongue confess that He is Lord. His Kingdom will
never end. Earthly kings are dethroned and their kingdom’s fade away, but the
King of the world is just that…King of the World. He is the Ancient of Days…the
One Who was...is …and will always be.
The
kings of this world make promises to make everything right. But they always
fail at some level. But the King we serve is not like any other king.
Revelation tells us:
Revelation 1:4-8 The Voice
(VOICE)
4 I, John, to the seven churches in Asia:
May you experience God’s
favor and rest in the peace
that comes from the One who is, the One who was, and the One who is coming;
from the seven Spirits, the Perfect
Spirit, constantly before God’s throne; 5 and
from Jesus the Anointed, the Witness who is true and faithful, the first to emerge from death’s cold womb,
the chosen Ruler over all the
kings and rulers of the earth.
To the One who loves us
and liberated us from the grip of
our evil deeds through His very own blood 6 and who
established us to be His kingdom
and priests for God, His Father. May glory and power be His throughout all the
ages. Amen.
7 Look! He is coming with the clouds, in glory.
He will capture every eye,
Even of those who pierced Him through.
All the nations of the earth will be pierced with grief when He appears.
He will capture every eye,
Even of those who pierced Him through.
All the nations of the earth will be pierced with grief when He appears.
Yes, may all this be done according to His plan. Amen.
Lord God: 8 I am the
Alpha and the Omega, [the very beginning and the very end,][a] the One who is, the One who was, and the
One who is coming: the All Powerful.
Our
king will one day return and turn this world “right side up” again. Every wrong
will be made right. What a mighty King we serve!
Today
is Christ the King Sunday. A day we celebrate the fact that not only is our King
unlike any other king, but He is King above all kings. And we celebrate the
fact that one day He will return and fulfill that promise to return and set
everything right side up again.
3 Do not put your trust in princes, in
human beings, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit
departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to
nothing. 5 Blessed are those whose help is the God of
Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. 6 He is the
Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—he remains faithful
forever. 7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and
gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free,
(Psalm
146:3-7 (NIV)
In Whom will you trust?
Amen

“That
lack of vision may be part of why the Jewish leaders could
not see Christ as the real Messiah prophesied in
scripture.
They were looking for a lower-case messiah like Saul or
David,
an earthly king to overthrow Rome, not the Lamb to take
away
their condemnation under Law.”

too many of us lower our view of scripture in order to match
