I saw their faces – v2

They were her students
just starting in college
sitting hopeful, watching,
in the student union,
their Teacher in Space.

I saw their faces
contorted in pain
watching in horror
gasps, bodies shaking,
as a dream went up in flames.

In a way, tragically,
youth was taken from them
As I listened, I knew
they would carry that day
for the rest of their lives.

Remember watching it over and over in the TV lounge in the

Memorial Union Building at the University of New Hampshire.

As each new person saw it, another gasp of horror.

So many were watching because of Christa.

When the #Challenger exploded

When the Challenger exploded
all of us were brought into tragedy
by the TV screens, the images
none of us wanting to believe.

A gasp, in horror, raw pain,
as each one saw for the first time
their faces confused, clouds of smoke,
somehow knowing death was inside.

A gasp was the response
as each person faced tragedy
alive in our hearts that day
never to be forgotten.

I have never felt more like an astronaut

I have never felt more like an astronaut

I have never felt more like an astronaut

the temperature below 0 degrees

my gloves like mittens

trying to pick up paper

blowing across the parking lot.

I have never felt more like an astronaut,

thank God for their training,

grasping things in weightlessness

how that must be a challenge

with gloves that feel like mittens.

in black and white – v2

in black and white
flickering grainy images
wonder at our nation’s progress
Apollo 11 landing on the moon

in black and white
in wonder, in amazement
woken from our slumber
to watch men walk on the moon

in black and white
returning, landing in the Pacific
brought aboard the Hornet
our victory complete
