A #Hobbit #Hunt

Away from our books, our studies,
I think beer was the prize,
A Hobbit Hunt in the woods,
I had a good head start.

I heard them laughing,
as I lay under the leaves,
But I was found too quickly,
then it was time to leave.

A Hobbit Hunt

During our freshman year at UNH in 1978, my friends called me Hobbit,
Because I was the shortest of our group and because I had
A certain amount of hair on the top of my feet (smile).
Someone suggested a Hobbit Hunt in College Woods.
I hid pretty well behind a log under leaves.
It took John Labonte a while to find me.

Clog thief

Lurking in the stacks no longer,
Apprehended convicted,
But a legacy remaining,
Revealed over time.

As the collection expanded
More books are added
Shifts in the stacks
More clogs were revealed...

Clog thief

https://raymondafoss.blogspot.com/2022/02/clog-thief.html

in 1977 and 1978, a student stole over 20 pair of clogs and

other things from the UNH Library.

He was arrested and convicted.

in 1981 and 1982, I performed several shifts

of books in the stacks and we found several more clogs

stashed behind the books

Menacing Insects – v3

A big fat black dirigible of a fly
careening around the office
buzzed me, like a test pilot and the tower
(or maybe a latex balloon releasing its gases).
I could feel its clumsy wake
the lurch of its glide path,
Before it landed on the wall,
taunting me to strike back.

Carol said, “They’re huge this time of year,
you could almost put a saddle on them.”
I would laugh even more if it wasn’t so true.

The banter reminded me of the June Bug
that flew into the tip of my nose
last week on the walk to my car
at the end of another work day;
Leading me to laugh at a thought
of the silliest workers’ comp claim in history
When I got whiplash from the impact.

Oh what the paperwork would have been.

Thompson Hall

It was a moment of fate
a convergence of events
that gave me an opportunity
chance to capture
spark in a bottle
moment of time
rich cool color
frozen now
but momentary then
volcanic ash,
lights lit and unlit
framing of the shot
long shutter speed
a tripod and cable release
gave me the presence
to see it
preserve it

To Tag

To tag, or not to tag: that is the problem:
Whether 'tis nobler in the whole to endure
The slings and arrows of disgruntled faculty,
Or to take steps against a claim of ownership,
And by refuting quell them? To dispose: to surplus;
No more; and by a disposal to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That equipment is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To dispose, to surplus;
To surplus: perchance to profit: ay, there's the rub;
For in that disposal process of purchase what revenue may come
When we have left Property Control,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of longevity;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The department's wrong, the faculty's contumely,
The pangs of despised control, the law's delay,
The insolence of staff and the spurns
That patient merit of the campus takes,
When they themselves might his quietus make
With a rusty key? who would workstudys bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after tagging,
The academic buildings from whose bourn
No tagging student returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than complain to management that we know not of?
Thus the inventory does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action. - Soft you now!
Be all my property remember'd.
