 Seeds of last Autumn - v4

Seeds of last Autumn

clutched by the young branches,

holding on for a moment longer;

Shoots of this Springtime

awakening in brilliance

our hope for Summer,

now bursting into view.

Captured together, sharing,

a contrast of shades, of colors,

stirring, intertwined, mingling

fading khaki and brilliant chartreuse;

A change of the seasons

awakening, surging, shining,

alive, exploding into view.

#dreams unfulfilled

paths not taken

haunted by echoes

unanswered prayers

steps not taken

dreams still waiting

my heart heavy, broken

fears too great yet

frozen, not moving

stuck in one place

dreams not forgotten

carried in my heart still

though as yet unmet

before death the grave

Post-Graduate – v2

What do we learn from the roads not taken,

of choices made without full exploration?

“What if”, and “where would I be”, if only…

but we cannot go back

I was a Writer at eighteen,

“He leaves to become the next John Steinbeck”

in the Senior Class Will…

But a different path taken

No post-graduate year,

Mr. Paquette’s idea,

of writing and study

exploring a different path

Full-time college instead,

because of Dad’s dread,

the struggle he endured

so many years of night school

Numbers, not words

tapped my precision,

though unconscious decision

simple path taken

Poet at forty, closing the circle

Reading and typing the Law

Leaves me in awe

at the power of words

The same power

That held me back then

and which I use now

to reach a different end.

Charged electricity

In the room, on edge,

Caffeine in the coffee and in my pacing feet.

My name first on the list

Bold, in uppercase print,

Ready to share my new poem

The captured memories

Excited to grab the mike, the spotlight,

Proud to share my love

For my grandmother.

Watching the reaction,

Adding reflection and inflection,

To paint the picture

To set the scene

For each person listening

So they could see her,

Or their own loved one,

Taking them back

To memories

That ground us all.

Athenaeum – v2

History, biography, adventures, opened,

found in the pages I read

how long I wanted to linger

in reading the names on the shelf

How much I needed to learn more

about the world and that place

the marvels in the printed words

were more than I could embrace

I wanted to stay there and linger

with heroes and tales of old

to see the world through their tales

and spend hours in their throes

To wander throughout the whole world

without leaving my room or my space

to grow and to flourish

among the pages of these books
