Preparing the Way

The Advent season,
the words of his story
God come to earth
preparing the way
the messengers of God
this season, this year, for each
offering the news again
of Christ coming into the world
from the manger, the cross,
the skies once more
his life of sacrifice revealed
the love of God alive

God’s Messengers

Where angels of mortals
by prophesy or proclamation
the time of Advent
the season of waiting
a time for God’s messengers
to retake the stage

Too long has the world
charted the course
leading the peoples astray
away from the Christ
We must return the manger
to the Bethlehem stable
to worship the king
come to earth as a child

We each are called,
God’s sons and daughters
to turn from the world
and proclaim God’s love
to enter the stable,
humbly kneeling
before the Christ child
but also going
to spread the Good News

Christ returning, to the stable,
the world below him
to judge the world
and to bring us home
No one should be left here
no one unworthy
all offered redemption
by the way of the cross

to understand the giving
Christ coming into the world
choosing the cross
not a throne made of gold
looking to the widow
her meager coins added
but giving sacrificially
love in her heart

so is the moment,
Christ come to earth
the babe, the manger
to understand his humble birth
we are given more
than we can imagine
in his descent from heaven
walking as a man

Spending equals Love

The lie of Christmas
the ways of this earth
that spending equals love
disproved by his humble birth

The king, our savior
born in a stable bed
laid to rest in a manger
straw under his head

Love is the sacrifice
the humbling of God
made flesh, human
to walk with us again

Serving in the land
going where the master led
choosing to follow the Lord
no throne, the cross instead

Giving himself, love laid bare
offering himself for us
that we may live again
this is the meaning of love

Not what we spend
and place under the Christmas tree
none of these gifts survive
the message of our God and king
this gift alone is love

Seeing Advent

Not the sales, the glitter, things we call
Christmas; not Santa and his sleigh
Seeing Advent anew,
so did she humbly pray

Calling us to listen
to hear the message of God
to slow and wait with Mary
for that coming blessed day

Journeying with them to Bethlehem
under his rising star
traveling far to his manger bed
his light leading our way

Reading of the scriptures
telling of his holy birth
the joy of Christmas morn’
God, love, come to earth

Busy

We are busy
when we should be waiting
expectantly, actively
waiting for the king
Our lives hectic
no time to wait
the list growing
we may be late
The season spinning
we go round and round
busy when we should be waiting
no time for Christ

Better to Receive, to Give

As we go our ways
as we walk all of our days
better to give than to receive
just as we are told

But in this moment, in this season
a changing of our minds
the joy of Christmas
in the gift we all have received
The one gift, Jesus Christ

God, love, born as a child
humble, in a manger bed
This man, this servant
going as the master led
even to the cross

Better than any gift
we give or we receive
On him should be our sights
his star guiding our days

Better to receive,
Christ into our hearts,
to give his message to all;
God loves us
his arms are open wide
to all who accept his gift

who is the babe

We must never forget
in the rush of this season
who is the babe
laying in the manger bed

Word made flesh,
the man in the Jordan
rising up, a dove falling upon him
walking this earth
God’s love to reveal

Going to the cross,
this babe grown, to dying
rising from death
God’s power revealed

in the frenzy, the motion
the maddening pace
lost in the season
the reason for Advent

Christ forgotten
in our rush, our running
to find presents and toys
that may never be used

A prayer for our Advent
to slow, waiting
focused only on
the coming of the King

News to the Shepherds

only the shepherds
working the third shift
through the nigh
heard the news, the message
of our savior’s birth
what must they thought then
on the cold lonely hillsides
the savior in a manger bed
no one else around
the people like David
the patriarchs of old
to the shepherds shared
the glorious story foretold
The coming into the world
the Christ, our king
laid in a manger bed
our savior, a child, vulnerable
needing loving care

A Humble King

a humble king
in a manger bed
not a king upon a throne
so entered our savior
into the world
each of us to save

not what was expected
not even in the least
the Messiah in a bed of straw
a stranger in the home of David
chosen by the Lord

serving, not being served
unknown in his youth
rising from the waters
to go and do the master’s work

out into the land
walking on sandaled feet
healing and to preach
offering us much to learn
in what he had to teach

going to the cross, our Lord
humbly submitting to God
going as he had come into the world
a humble king, on Calvary

only in rising, on Easter morn’
ascending to heaven above
the truth of the prophesy fulfilled
this humble king the Christ

the coming savior
ushering in a time of peace
swords in plowshares
neighbor loving neighbor
all coming to Zion
to the new Jerusalem
rising above the hills
All of us welcome
all called to enter in

If only this year could be
a reflective Advent
a time of peace, within our spirits
spending time with family and friends
the hustle, the frenzy, the stores
all of these left behind
waiting for our king
Slowing our steps, our pace
lingering in your word
looking to the star
the light, the Christ
come into the world

A lowly stable

how right, based on the rest of his life,
a lowly stable, not a palace, a throne
the king of kings herald by the animals
lain in a manger bed,
a refugee in foreign lands,
unknown most of his life
ministering to the lost, the least,
the last his only friends
walking on the earth
toward the cross and death
our salvation brought to earth
in God alive, a man
born and placed in a manger bed

As he spoke her name

an image, her face smiling
flashing into my mind
wondering if others saw her too
as he spoke her familiar name
a member of the flock
gone temporarily from our midst
his words of care, concern
bringing her face to my eye
joining with the pastor’s prayer

Look up! Easter people
raise your eyes
his star still shining
guiding us in the night
Advent upon us
waiting for the king
God made human
the one who came and died
an offering to give
his life given on the cross
that we all might live
Starting before the manger throne
the humble birth of Christ
the journey under the star
a time of waiting for our king

unaware of the things happening

would we be like them
unaware of the things happening
the momentous events
going on in our midst
the people not seeing
the light of Christ above
going about their busy lives
unable to see

We, unlike those people,
aware that Christ has come
yet so busy in our day to day
the season caught up in hectic motion
not stopping to wait for the king
would we be aware
if he came again
back into our midst

But we, like the shepherds

The people of Bethlehem
of Israel nowhere to be found
not by the manger bed, nowhere at all;
But we, like the shepherds,
have heard the clarion call
the savior come to earth
to his cradle we should go
Waiting for Christmas day
the coming of our king
bowing, waiting expectantly
the babe, the cross, the one
Our savior, washing away
the stain of blood upon us
Why do we rush past,
focused on ourselves,
when he gave his life for us

Watching the Skies

watching the skies, the signs
the light of Christ shining
for those who would see
His star rising, seeing from the east
ignored by the people
too busy to see
Our days of waiting
the coming of the Lord
signs of his goodness
all around, not in stores
We miss the season,
the joy of our hearts
racing about when
we should be waiting
focused on our king

Waiting - 3

So hard for us to do
to still ourselves
to sit, waiting
in this modern age
So many stimuli
so much motion
ever by our side
Waiting for the Christ child
these days of Advent rest
heeding the words of the gospel
preparing us for our savior
His star rising, ever guiding us to him
entering into the stable, kneeling before our king
Waiting, amid the tumult
the frenetic pace of life
waiting for the Christ child
sent to give us eternal life

Called to Bethlehem

Like Mary, like Joseph
the shepherds and the wise men
called to Bethlehem
to see the savior’s birth
Traveling, waiting
traveling far
we all moved toward
David’s city
following Christ’s star

The prophesy, the promises of angels
in the manger bed revealed
the king of kings and lord of lords
come to earth to save
While the world around ignored
or did not notice
we travel, called to Bethlehem
waiting for our savior’s birth

Hastening to Bethlehem

Maybe, in this modern age,
the best way to think of
the journey to the Christ child
the season of waiting, Advent
Hastening to Bethlehem
to catch a glimpse of the king
the rush, the motion
of our days only allow
a furtive, hectic gaze

The truth is hard to contemplate
if we slow for contemplation
our lives to busy for the king
a sale beckons
We miss the greatest gift of all
our savior come to earth
in the frenetic spin of life
trusting in ourselves not him
Slow to wait, to linger
to sit at the master’s feet
welcoming the Christ child
into the world once again

Turning toward Bethlehem

The season upon us
entering in, waiting
yet turning, toward Bethlehem
journeying toward his star
traveling, walking
back to that moment in time
when our savior came to earth
God as man alive
The humble virgin mother
her husband by her side
the animals, the shepherds alone
bowing before the Lord
The one prophesied,
the Messiah in our midst
in the lowly manger bed
God entered the world
Changing the expectations
the prophesy alive
walking toward the cross
so that we no more would die

hope, our faith alive
within this season
waiting for the coming of our King
victory over death
no more holding its sting
we walk with the Lord
on that journey to his birth
the humble manger bed
the still of the night
herald angels sang

his star shining

Jesus came unnoticed

in the running and energy
the world ignoring the savior
the star above forgotten
God in their midst
Jesus came unnoticed
only the animals
and shepherds attending
bowing down at the creator’s bed

in our time and in our place
the same frenetic motion
running from store to store
forgetting the Christ
Jesus still unnoticed
here on this earth
the creator dwelling with us
who will bow at his altar/cross

Returning once more
at the start of the season
the turning of the year
toward his birth in Bethlehem
The story told again
of the coming Christ child
entering this world
a humble manger bed
Returning with all the others
the saints before and around us
waiting, watching for his star
believing in his saving

Living with us
that we might see love

A Promise of God

The immaculate child
born of the virgin
a promise of God
fulfilled in the Christ
The Lord, the creator of all,
proclaimed, “I will make”,
the offspring of the line
the line of David
fulfilling his promise
covenant with the people
from the hand, the will of God
our savior, our redeemer come!

Our Priorities

before we can change the world
our priorities must be assessed
not “theirs”, the ways of the world
our hearts turned toward God
waiting, patiently, expectantly,
actively waiting for the coming of the Christ
preparing our hearts, our lives
re-pointing our compass
on our one true King
letting go of the world’s measuring
our priorities, our vision
on the babe in the manger,
the man on the cross,
the savior rising to heaven

What Blessings We Miss

Like those, beside the shepherds, the wise men,
in the rush, the running around
the hustle and bustle of Christmas
what have we forgotten

the things, the noise, the commotion
and not on the coming Christ child
our Lord, our brother, our savior,
our king come to the earth

Oh how he spoke,
naming the fact of the Christ
with us, already here
before he was born
before the manger, the star
out of his silence, speaking
proclaiming the coming of the Lord

While the World Failed to Notice

While the world failed to notice
the king, our savior, born, placed in a manger bed
no room for his parents in the inn
foreigner, stranger, in the land of his ancestors
the people unaware, failing to see
his star, above them, guiding others
ready to change history
Shepherds, angels,
the animals only
witnesses to the divine birth
the one from the beginning
the one foretold long ago
into the world, God incarnate
coming while the world was too busy
wrapped up in the noise of life
unaware Christ had come into the world
