The Christ, the Messiah
submitting to the Father
there in the garden
on the night of His betrayal
giving himself over
the priest the sacrifice
entering the holy of holies
the altar, the cross

--------------------
The Priest Offering Himself
Christ, the priest
mediating with God
offering himself on the cross
a sacrifice of a pure, unblemished lamb
our sins place on him
Into the fires, the sin offering
taking the cup to his lips
taking on the suffering
the scripture fulfilled
his life given for us
Once and for all time
the law complete
the sins of the world wiped clean
the priest offering himself
for blood of the lamb
poured out for you and me

Matthew 26:39
“And he went a little further, and fell on his face,
and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible,
let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will,
but as thou wilt”. (KJV)

Spending equals love – v2
What we give
of ourselves
as Christ did
when he climbed the rugged cross
Spending equals love
what we sacrifice
lifting up our neighbors
sharing the blessings from above
Doing our part
where the Spirit calls
going where we are led
giving God our all

------
Spending equals Love
The lie of Christmas
the ways of this earth
that spending equals love
disproved by his humble birth
The king, our savior
born in a stable bed
laid to rest in a manger
straw under his head
Love is the sacrifice
the humbling of God
made flesh, human
to walk with us again
Serving in the land
going where the master led
choosing to follow the Lord
no throne, the cross instead
Giving himself, love laid bare
offering himself for us
that we may live again
this is the meaning of love
Not what we spend
and place under the Christmas tree
none of these gifts survive
the message of our God and king
this gift alone is love

These Bones Can Live
Together, coming together
one people, one body
pulled together
pulled together
into union
alive, as one
bone to bone
sinew, flesh
flesh pulled together
alive, these bones can live

Flames of Power - 2
They didn’t know it
what Christ meant by the coming
the Spirit descending
to fill us with power
to send us forth
out into the world
to redeem the lost
from the wages of sin
to turn hearts around
by the Spirit within
flames of power
flowing through us

The Flames of Pentecost
Nothing like fire
to prove God’s promise, fulfilled
the coming of the Spirit
while they all yet lived
Christ’s words alive
not merely a dove
the flames of Pentecost
sent from heaven above
Landing on each believer
giving the power to share
speaking in words of love
that all the world may hear
Christ’s hands and feet
His voice here below
going as the Spirit leads
until we right with Him
the living witnesses
of God’s love for us

Not yet scar tissue
the flesh of Christ
these many days beyond
after the death, the resurrection
while he walked the earth
here with us
until he ascended
still of the clay of earth
Not yet scar tissue
but healed of the trauma
the holy body of his self
still showing the affront
the beating and his sacrifice
softer yet reminding
of his great love for us

Alive with Power
The promise of the Spirit
on that Ascension Day
fulfilled by our Father
when Christ rose that day
Preparing a way
a place for us someday
a path for the blessing
to the least and the lost
God’s commission
to the ends of the earth
fired with the Spirit
alive, with power
to transform the world

Sermon, "I Promise. . . ", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, Ascension Sunday 2011,
Pastor Ruth Foss

Ascension Sunday
June 5, 2011
Acts 1:3-11 Gods Word Bible
Luke 24:44-53 the Message Bible
“I Promise. . . ”
The Lord be with you
And also with you
Let us pray. . .
Loving, Compassionate, God, we thank you for this day that we gather as a community to hear your word. May we have ears to hear your word, minds open to your direction and hearts set a flame by your Spirit. Thank you for your “love letter”, your word that gives us direction and reminds us of your goodness. May your word be heard though me or in-spite of me. May the meditations of our hearts and minds be pleasing to you our Rock and Refuge. . . amen?!
Have you ever had a promise made to you by someone and they were not able to fulfill that promise to you? Or, have you ever made a promise to someone and, because of situations out of your control. . . or in your control. . . you were not able to keep it? I know I have. How did that make you feel? Upset with that person. . . or at yourself. . . frustrated because you really wanted to keep the promise but were unable too? Why is it so hard to keep a promise at time? I know that “life gets in the way” at times but I think we all want to be a man or woman of our word. I am so happy that God is faithful to His promises it’s something I have come to truly rely on.
Throughout the bible we hear stories that give us encouragement that God’s promise is true. . . we hear stories about how faithful people believed in God’s promises and they were not let down. Some of these people of faith may not have seen the promise come true in their lifetime but they trusted that they would. They trusted God’s plan and in God’s goodness. Look at Abraham. . . God promised that Abraham would have more descendents that the grains of sand. Abraham never saw it but he trusted in God, that He would do what He said He’d do, and did as God asked him to do. . . heck even after God making that promise to him, giving him Isaac, God asked him to sacrifice his son Isaac he was going to do it. . . how would he have descendents if he sacrificed his own son? But he trusted in Gods promise. . . he knew God would make a way. . . he took him to a mountain top. . . and just as he was about to do it he was stopped. . . he trusted in Gods providence. . . God provided a ram instead. Moses led the Israelites through the desert to a place that God had promised. As they went through the desert Moses continued to believe in God’s promise...a land of milk and honey. . . and then after 40 years, they reached the “Promised Land.” There are many more of God’s promises throughout the bible that have come true. . . many promises.
Throughout the “Old Testament”, we read a lot about a savior. . . a Messiah. . . that would come and free God’s people. These messages of hope to the people were given through people who were known as the prophets of old. This promise of a Redeemer is what kept the people going. These scriptures about a Messiah were handed down from generation to generation. The stories about how faithful God had been were also handed down through the generations. The long awaited Messiah came through the life of a child born to a virgin named Mary. As a matter of fact Christ’s whole ministry, especially His death and resurrection, fulfilled the scriptures about the Messiah, even if the people couldn’t see it.
Today is Ascension Sunday, the day that our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ, ascended into heaven. Jesus’ “earthly” ministry was concluded. He was going to heaven now to prepare a place for you and for me and begin His ministry as our Advocate in heaven. . . going to the Father on our behalf. We heard one story about that day in the Epistle reading from Acts this morning. Listen to the story about that day written in the Gospel of Luke. . . it is found in Luke 24 verses 44-53 (I’m reading from the Message Bible this morning)
Through Jesus’ ministry on earth and His Ascension into heaven forgiveness of sin is offered to ALL nations, the Holy Spirit was made available to the church, Jesus prepared a place for us, His own, in heaven, there is increased outreach through the church. . . the people filled with the Holy Spirit, forgiveness is available and glory not death is God’s final word! But in the resurrection, another of God’s promises is fulfilled. . . the promise of the Holy Spirit for all who believe. . . a spirit of power and might. . . a spirit of strength. . . a spirit of peace. . . a spirit of hope.
But the first disciples had to do one thing, they had to trust the promise and wait until it arrived. So. . . what did they do. . . how do we know they believed in the promise? They went to the temple, praising God and overjoyed, and worshipped continually in the temple. They realized God’s faithfulness in the past and trusted in God’s faithfulness in the present and future (remember. . . they had to wait).
The disciples were called to bear witness. . . as so are we. . . to what has been seen and experienced. . . A witness to the reality of the Risen Lord and forgiveness of sins. But in order for that, Christ needs to be a living reality in and through our lives. The first disciples were “eye-witnesses” of the events but we are the “I-witnesses” of the events in our lives. . . how God has been faithful in our lives. . . how God has fulfilled the promises He has made in our lives. Without our I-witness, without the reality of Christ seen in our lives. . . how can we fulfill the great commission we as believers have been given “to go out and make disciples of all nations”. . . how will the never ending story of God’s goodness continue if we don’t shout it from the roof tops for all to hear. We have a great and glorious God who is mighty to save! Come and see that the Lord is Good!
AMEN?!

But he trusted in Gods promise. . . he knew God would make a way. . . he took him to a mountain top. . . and just as he was about to do it he was stopped. . . he trusted in Gods providence. . . Glory
Glory, not merely life,
is God’s final word
redeeming us from death
from the pit of our stain
guiding us all our days
to the end of the age
With us always
beating within our hearts
leading us if we will follow
the Spirit’s call within us
Calling us to heaven
when our work here is through
a place in glory prepared
for the likes of me and you

In the Resurrection
In the Resurrection
the second part of grace
the first being the sacrifice
wiping clean the slate
The second is the rising
lifting us from death
rising with our Savior
to continue his work on earth
In the Ascension
the rising of Christ
preparing a place for us
at the end of our days
Prepared for the Pentecost
the coming of the Spirit
to fill us with fire
to send us forth to serve

To Bear Witness
Not to be silent
to be comfortable in place
to sit on our laurels
to be happy in place
We are to bear witness
to spread the message of love
to harness the Spirit’s power
sent to us from above
To go in its leading
to offer Christ’s holy word
to give ourselves wholly
to redeem broken souls
Humble servants only
willing pots of clay
offering the blessing
poured on us each day

Ignited by Your Spirit
Our lives changed forever
redeemed by Your sacrifice
raised by Your love
Ignited by Your Spirit
sent from heaven above
Hearts set aflame
burning within
set into the world
that others may simply live

Focus on Now
Do not worry
about the time or place
trust in the Lord
and go in His name
To be his witnesses
infused with the Spirit’s power
going to the ends of the earth
to share God’s love with all
Focus on now
not dwelling on the future
for we know not the time and place
the moment of God’s choosing

sending ripples of his love

Life is the Final Word
The death of our sin
not God’s answer
grace will find a way
through the sacrifice of Christ
Redeemed from the pit
Life is the final word
brought from the dead
by the resurrection of Christ
To live with him in glory
All of us to bear witness
how God changed us
freeing us from ourselves
to rise with him to heaven

For All to Hear
The story continues
by voices raised up
shouting from the rooftops
for all to hear of God’s love
Pouring out a blessing
on each beating heart
redeeming us with his body,
with his blood poured out for us
with us in good times
in times of sorrow too
guiding if we will let him
seeing us through
going on before us
preparing a place for us
ready when our time is done
a place in heaven above

To Testify - 2
Our purpose clearly defined
why we would receive such power
the Spirit to descend upon us
to bathe us with a message
To testify about Christ
to bear our witness
of God’s great love for man
poured out on each believer
We are to go,
to cover the whole world
to share the message of God’s love

we will receive power
when the Spirit comes from heaven
when we come to believe
when we are gifted by our Father
when the flames rest upon us

knowing the Master’s purpose

Rising from this plane

You Will
The certainty of our Savior
the redeemed Master
raised from the dead
after the crucifixion
walking with the disciples
leading them toward glory
ascending after the promise
You will be given
power, the Spirit
will descend
to dwell within your hearts
We will be graced
by the living God
breathing with us
giving us power from above

Baptized by the Holy Spirit
Christ’s promise
of what would soon come
unable to be fulfilled
while he walked the earth
Only by ascending
on that blessed day
only in reflection
could we with joy say
He rose from the earth
into the arms of the Lord
redeemed from his feet of clay
to walk once more with God
Preparing a place for us
an advocate for us
intervening on our behalf
preparing a way for us
The Ascension only joyous
in reflection, in the past
what it must have been for them
thinking they were lost
the Master ascended
they were still here on earth
praying in constant worship
until his promise was fulfilled
Baptized by the Holy Spirit
on the day of Pentecost
the rest of Christ’s promise
redeeming all from the lost
sending us as witnesses
to the ends of the earth
offering the whole world redemption
by the price paid at the cross
Christ’s promise
that we would be baptized
baptized not with water
but by the Holy Spirit
washed in the Creator’s love
the living waters descending
drenching us with power
sending us forth as witnesses
at the Maker’s hour

In Our Own Lives
Different than the first disciples
who shared the walk in this life
walking with our Savior
Jesus in the flesh
Yet we too are witnesses
steeled by the Spirit’s power
able to speak of God’s love
how He changed our lives
We all are commissioned
as Christ promised on that day
reborn at the Lord’s choosing
giving a Spirit of joy
led to go and spread the news
to set the people free
bringing God’s message of grace
to all humanity

God raised Christ up
from the bonds of the dust
His clay given flight
taken up to heaven
raised above the plane of this existence
to prepare a place for us

When the Spirit Comes
A hint of the fire
of the power of that day
when the Spirit comes to earth
a charge to keep,
the blessed Great Commission,
to tell people far and wide
of the Savior’s compassion
of the saving grace
of our merciful God
lifting us from the dust
bringing us into His loving arms

To Prepare a Place
Only able to fulfill his promise
to prepare a place for us
to be our advocate in heaven
if he ascended again
Christ living out his ministry
fulfilled completely
sowing seeds of love
planted in our hearts
Dying that we may rise with him
to heaven above

His earthly body
Christ’s ascension
his earthy body
getting out of the way
for the Spirit’s power
to descend on that day
fulfilling His promise
the promise of the living God
to be with us always
to the end of the age
Only with the ascension
would the coming Pentecost
be full of the fire and passion
the Spirit’s coming
in mighty power and love

In His Promise
Perfect, complete
trusting in His promise
able to believe
in God, in Christ
the promises
fulfilled in the Word
longing to be with us
to heal us completely
to bring us from the pit
to rise to highest heaven
God through Christ
a way to reconcile
to fulfill His promise
if we would follow
forgiving our debt
the stain of our rebellion
reunited with Christ
in the highest heaven

Ask Boldly
Ask boldly, for God will answer
granting us the desires of our hearts
speak clearly, asking directly
knocking on the door
knowing He will let us in
into His goodness
His mercy and kindness
the kingdom’s door
He will open wide
seeking ever His holy presence
in the silence of unending prayer
God will answer
offering us richly
from the endless
depths of His love
granting to us
all we need
trusting in Him
from His mercy
His compassion
for his children here below
offering a foretaste
a glimpse of heaven
in the love
He bestows

Spending Time with Our Savior
A lesson for us in the story
busy Martha running about
noble motives, offering hospitality
but missing the larger point
Mary blessed, by her attention
Spending time at the feet of Christ
drinking in his holy message
unfocused on the things of this earth
How often do we become distracted
clinging to our busy lives
failing to stop,
to spend precious minutes
Sitting at the feet of God;
open the word
linger with Christ
heed His calling for our lives
The better path
to sit in stillness
to drink in as Mary did
God’s message for our lives

Not by a subdivision
A shrewdness in the lesson
turning the words right around
a challenge to the expert
to truly understand
the living word of God
The definition of our neighbors
turned around
to focus on us
not by a subdivision,
but by our actions
here on earth
each of us to be a neighbor
offering them
God’s endless love
poured out
from our actions
lifting them up
from the dust of the earth

By His Acts a Neighbor
Taking pity on a stranger
giving of himself
showing mercy
by his acts a neighbor
living out
the word of God
giving of himself
