Come Thirsty – v2

Oh, come thirsty, come into the sanctuary
into the presence of God, this place
onto sacred ground
be filled, be refreshed
to seek the face of Christ
in our neighbors, in the words of song,
in the message in the scripture
the telling of the Good News

Oh, come thirsty, come to the well
to the living waters of salvation
to be made new, reborn, in His image
to drink your fill, to run this race
with renewed strength, with courage,
with faith as if of a mustard seed
but able to move a mountain
stepping out of the boat onto firm water

Oh, come thirsty, to the Lord’s house
feeling His grace, all around you
entering into worship, real worship
listening for that still small voice of God
His message, His call for your life
enter into His courts, fall at His altar
believe in His plan for you, from before your birth
plans to enrich you, and to bring your home

Fluted Wine Goblets – v2

Bright, glowing, variegated, orange,
crimson, and gold, perfect
living fluted wine goblets,
the envy of any glassworks,
a credit to the artist, the maker

Standing tall, elegant, knowingly
swaying in the bright morning light
out our pantry window
the tulips growing
higher, up to the sky

Curled up – v2

Curled up,
Tightly wrapped,
as she was so recently
inside her mother’s womb
curled up in her father’s arms
matching bracelets, letting him in
her tiny fingers, little perfect features
a wonder, each finger, amazing, in miniature,
she was warm, protected, feeling love all curled up
in her daddy’s arms

Find God Here – v2

Lord, find me ready, waiting,
Here, right where I live
where we worship, together
where I work, where I toil,
where my wife, my girls are with me,
where we live, here, now,
in this place where I am planted
as if by living streams of water.

Here, where this tree is planted now,
transplanted from the world,
to grow, to bloom, to offer shade
to scatter seeds from good fruit
planting, watering, in their season.

May I find God here, not some distant land,
standing beside me in my struggles
walking with me on my journey
holding my hand when I step out in faith
cheering with me in my joys, triumphs,
in those moments when I notice,
when I am present, when I feel Christ’s grace
(not that God’s grace is ever lacking).

Right here with me, epiphany, revelation,
God as close as breath, when I am aware,
when I don’t feel the Spirit, May I find God’s face,
Christ’s presence, here with me now,
right here, right where I am planted.

Find Him There – v2

Find Him There
The following poem was posted to the www.christianpoetry.org site
on April 1, 2009, my 49th birthday. I received the following email
from Reason A. Poteet, “Happy Birthday, Raymond.
Your poem today, “Traveling Far" reminds me of the message
a saintly guide had for our group visiting in Jerusalem several years ago.
He said, you have come so far to see the places where Jesus walked,
where He talked and healed and cast out demons two thousand years ago.
Jesus is still working today in your homes, in your schools,
in your churches...go home and find Him there, relish Him,
serve Him.” The poem above came from this.

Traveling Far

Unlike the shepherds,
on a nearby hillside, watching their sheep.

Not called by a choir of angels,
a chorus of heavenly host.

Reading the signs, as they did in Jerusalem,
traveling far, following his star.

By a faithfulness, greater than the people
the chosen ones.

Bringing gifts, these gifts,
in fulfillment, the birth, their gifts.

Believing where the select, the chosen did not,
traveling far, with real faith.

Following the star, the signs,
the coming of the newborn king.

Dig out the hydrants – v2

The fire already raging
the land, scorched, charred
so many already lost.
Dig out the hydrants,
clear them, access to the water
send the crews, shovels at the ready
clear away the rest.
The fire raging, burning;
all of them are needed.
Man the pumps, the hoses.
The fire must go out.

on shoveling out our church’s roadside sign,
comparing the need for these spiritual “hydrants”
with the fire hydrants so often shoveled out by volunteers.
The fire here is the coarseness of the world.

Donning His Sandals – v2

When you look down
what do you see,
regardless of what
you are wearing
on your feet.

Do you see the Master’s feet;
are you wearing His sandals
today? Are you going where
you are called, where you are led?

Are you reaching out
to those in need,
caring for your neighbor,
witnessing to the Good News
in your life, your walk.

Slip on the sandals,
feel them, their memory,
wrap them around your feet
Walk in His sandals
today, believer,
become Fishers of Men.

Dorcas Preaching – Blog Action Day – v2

We should remember, her story, her acts of faith
out of her poverty, her little, meager resources
she offers lessons for us all, as did the widow,
a way to live our lives more fully, to trust in God

Up from the pages, from the town of Joppa
the port, overlooking the Mediterranean
a disciple shared her witness, her response
to the saving of Christ, her work for the kingdom

Coming forward, to the front of the congregation
sharing a word of hope, of faith, of trust in God
within the quieted sanctuary, listening to her words,
resting on the stool, her widow’s bones tired, faithful

Sharing the meaning, the change in her life, epiphany
being a Christian, understanding the Gospel words
what the lines of the judgment mean to her
caring, with her ordinary gifts, with her sewing

Giving to others, out of her poverty, her hope
making clothes for others, those less fortunate
even than her widow’s stores, her home
Rich because of the gift of Christ, his presence

A testimony, a witness to her faith, her love
a common story, offering what she had, she gave
making all the difference, because of Christ’s love
caring for others, out of her poverty, her love

Embers, Burning Together – v2

Alone dying, the heat, the light failing
embers, burning together, gathering, sharing
building on the heat, the passion, the belief, the faith
one to another, in community, together
glowing, a beacon, a message of love
sending forth, reaching outward
seeds scattered, stones thrown into a pond
ripples sent, cast outward, to unknown shores
burning together those who could not alone
in the seeds scattered, in the joining with others
rising like a phoenix, like life itself
stronger, brighter together,
the embers, burning within us

Embrace All of Life – v2

Even in exile, in that time of trial,
that struggle far from our comfort zone
far from home and safety,
we are to embrace all of life
the hard and the happy
the pain and the peace
because we are God’s children
and He loves us
and God will hold us up
and gather us in
if we are faithful
and believe
if we trust
in Him

Empowered by the Holy Spirit – v2

Forever changed, different
these followers of Christ
while he traveled and preached
healed and walked, with them
Immanuel upon the earth
Empowered by the Holy Spirit
Christ now risen, holy once more
a new body, raised from the dead
breathing upon them, breath,
Transformed, reborn

Changed in that instant
the disciples reborn,
given power, authority
charged to go and spread His Word
Emboldened to tell the world
the message of the Lord
to offer grace and hope
to all who seek, who long,
and hunger, thirst,
all around the world

a body of rice – v3

To see the world
the Word, life,
as a child, to understand
with my heart
more than my intellect
my mind, real,
to see with these eyes.

This was a pure moment
an instant never
to be found again, captured,
A four-year-old’s faith,
captured in my ear
in the snack aisle
(for this moment the church).

A sleeve of rice cakes
seen for its essence
in a different place
at a time made holy;
Broken by clergy
as the Body of Christ
for the wheat intolerant.

My face broke into smile
before her question
caught too by her spirit
and her belief
in the transformation;
the world made more perfect
within this blessing.

Based on Shanequa’s question to me if this
was the body of Christ when we were at Market Basket
on April 22, 2006. She had assisted some weeks earlier at
setting up communion at the Rejuvenation service at our church.
She understood the elements were merely
bread and juice before the pastors’ blessing.

Eternity – v2

So much can be said
yet nothing understood
not as a human, not myself,
not unto ourselves
In the coming of the end
the climax of our days
leading to God
eternal, always.

Rising from the grave
as did the Christ
by God’s loving hand
the strength of His grace
Leading on, to the highest heaven
only in this does
our life here make any sense.

Journeying only, on this mortal coil.
the stuff of the earth
and made of the clay, the dust,
Salt from the earth
salt must we stay
yet carrying God’s light
to show others the way.

All of us growing
if we spend time in the Word
Rising, abiding, work to do
in the vineyards, the fields
coming to the harvest
the judgment of God

Sowing our seeds, scattered,
that the harvest would be greater
that the street of heaven
would be filled with all of God’s children
eternally seated in the courts of the Lord
Singing in heaven, with the heavenly chorus
joyful noise ringing, rising,
for all eternity

Falls – v2

Back out into the wet woods
Walking and hiking, going,
But always looking, watching,
Searching for that one moment
when the beauty of creation
finds a ready observer in me

Do you really see when
You are out there?
Peer through the underbrush,
the straight lines
for the curve of the slipper
caught in midair above its stem,
lost in the green.
Pink and white
amid the pine, birch,
maple and oak, the fir.

Climb the trail
up the granite, steps,
stop to gather mica
to see the pattern of the lichen
watch the mud
see the deer tracks
and crushed princess pine,
framed by a patch checkerberries.

Rush of the falls
curtain down the cliff
falling water, alive,
Real reward in those moments
For my quickened pulse
and sweat-wet brow.

Descend again,
but not too fast.
Don’t want to miss
The second act
of the drama.
The actors deserve no less;
My best to the Director
the Painter at the Canvas,
the Potter at the Wheel.

sermon, "All My Adoration", by Pastor Ruth Foss, Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, June 29, 2014

June 29, 2014
Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church
Sermon Series on “All My Day: A Summer of Prayer”
Sermon 2 of series-
“Adoration”
Psalm 105:1-6 Common English Bible
Exodus 15:1-3 The Living Bible
Psalm 89:1-18 The Message Bible

“All My Adoration. . . !”

Let us pray. . . (pray for God’s illumination. . . )

A reading from the book of Exodus, chapter 15, verses 1-3. . . listen for a word from God to you and me the people of God. . .

15 Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord:
I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
He has thrown both horse and rider into the sea.
2 The Lord is my strength, my song, and my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him.
He is my father’s God—I will exalt him.
3 The Lord is a warrior—
Yes, Jehovah is his name.

Adoration:
ad·o·ra·tion  [ad-uh-rey-shuhn]  noun
1. the act of paying honor, as to a divine being; worship.
2. reverent homage.
3. fervent and devoted love.
adoration  (ˌædəˈreɪʃən)
 — n
1.       deep love or esteem
2.       the act of worshipping

I love reading the Psalms. They help me in my times of trouble because they remind me of God’s goodness and mercy even through those rough spots in life. One of my favorites is Psalm 105 verses 1-6. It reads:

Psalm 105
105 Give thanks to the Lord;
    call upon his name;
make his deeds known to all people!
2 Sing to God;
    sing praises to the Lord;
dwell on all his wondrous works!
3 Give praise to God’s holy name!
Let the hearts rejoice of all those seeking the Lord!
4 Pursue the Lord and his strength;
    seek his face always!
5 Remember the wondrous works he has done,
all his marvelous works, and the justice he declared—
6     you who are the offspring of Abraham, his servant,
and the children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

I love how it talks about God and how awesome He is. It is right to give God the praise for all He has done. . . is doing or will ever do in our lives. But. . . I have a question for each of us. How many times do we begin our prayer time in adoration to God? Do we take time to address God for who He is and what He has done in our lives or do we just get right down to the “nitty gritty” of why we are there? Do we stop and think of how wonderfully awesome our God is or do we just skip that part and get right to our request from Him?

I have found in my own prayer time that when I take the time to stop and thank God for who He is my whole prayer time is transformed. I feel that connection with God because I have brought to mind who He is. I feel even stronger that my prayer will be answered because I have reminded myself of how God has answered in the past. It is at these times when I feel am sitting at His feet having a personal conversation with Him. . . a heart to heart so to speak. . . from my heart to His. . .

So how do we approach the throne of grace in such a way? For what or how do we really pray so that we can build a closer relationship with God. We want to have that “living-room conversation” with God. This summer, we are going to try and do just that. We have begun learning about prayer and what it is and how to pray. We have all had those times when we have gone to God and not known what to say. . . what to pray for. My hope is that our Summer Sermon Series “All My Days: A Summer of Prayer” will help us do just that. . . learn a way of prayer that will bring us closer to the maker of all we survey. But we are going to do it in a very tangible way.

This morning you were all given a set of prayer beads that Jessica, Ray and myself have made. Now the tradition of using a string of beads or rope knots is an ancient tradition as well as being a ritual action shared by many faith traditions around the globe. The common connection is the ability to give structure to personal prayer devotion. It offers a way to remind and revisit various areas of focus and concern. Repeated rituals can be powerful as they help shape our habits. This summer, we are invited to pray “All My Days” and to make a habit of prayer wherever you are. Each Sunday in worship we will focus on one of the steps of the prayer beads but you are encouraged to pray these categories all summer long. Now I want you to bring your beads with you to church as we spend the summer sitting at the feet of God spending time in prayer.

Last week Ms. Sally started us off by explaining what prayer is. . . it is a conversation between the created and the Creator. This week I would like to talk about a little thing. . . OK a BIG thing. . . called adoration. Now I have given you the definition of adoration at the beginning of my sermon this morning.

After reading the definition I really had to rethink how I use this word. For instance. . . “I really adore these shoes. . . they fit just right. . . they are my favorites” or “I adore how much you care for me Ray. . . ”. . . “ I adore my cat Fiona”. . . adoration of things and people in my life. Now I “love” people and things but do I really “adore” them. . . do I really show “adoration” to them and if I do. . . am replacing God as I do it? Do I worship my things...my cat. . .  or my husband? Do I look to these things instead of God? Well my cat seems to think so but my answer to that is no. But. . .  I need to think more about how I use this word and what I really mean when I use it.

Prayer. . . it begins with adoration of God. Our God is so awesome how could we not want to spend time thanking Him and adoring Him? As we begin with adoration our whole perspective is changed. As a matter of fact, we can give God adoration any time, not just during prayer time and it will change our perspective on life. Case in point. . . ”My life is so filled with pain and anguish, how can I keep going on?” . . .  “God. . . thank you that you are so awesome and powerful and that you are always with me. Even in the desert parts you are there. Thank you for helping me to get up out of bed today and move about. I trust that you will get me through whatever I need today by Your grace and mercy. . . ” “My life is so tough, I never have the money I need to do what I want. . . ” “Thank you God for how You provide what I need and some of my wants. I know that I have been in this spot before with low funds and I look forward with expectation for how you will help me through this. You are so wonderful and loving to Your children making sure we never go without.” Makes a difference doesn’t it?! As we begin to rethink our lives we begin to see the blessings all around us. Adoration. . . it makes a life good. . .

Let us pray. . . pray in adoration of who God is. . .

Amen
