Smells of Creation – v3

Freshly tilled soil, decay on the forest floor

Chocolate bubbling on the stove

Gardenias, violets, garlic breath

Sulphur of the volcano, the mud flat,

A spruce forest in June after a rain

The splash of ocean surf after a storm

The cold of snow as it starts to fall

Drawing us into its arms

A lilac bush, lily of the valley in bloom

Rain coming on a spring day,

Rain falling on hot wet pavement in summer

Fresh cut grass, maybe after a light shower,

Hay after cutting warming before baling

Bread, fresh from the oven, on the windowsill

The sweet of an orange as it goes from ripe to just moldy

A dusty road in August miles from home

Musty basements, a pool of standing water

Hamburgers on the grill, a hot fan belt

A tomcat’s mark, popcorn popping

Whisper of a rose blossom,

Stink of Roquefort cheese

An apple pie cooling on the shelf

The biting fragrance of a freesia’s flower

A geranium’s skin, a skunk’s defense,

Radiator fluid boiling over under the hood

Wet llama fur, wet burlap

New blacktop, a brand new car

A baby’s just-washed skin -

These are smells of creation,

A taste of the infinite.

Tastes of Creation - v2

Sweet maple syrup,

bitter radish, salad greens

Tart lemon, juicy fruits

Sour rhubarb, creamy sauces

Charred meat, flaky fish from the lake, the ocean

rich confections, (calories ignored)

Pungent cheese, cracked open lobster

Tangy barbecue, slippery squid

Salty brine pickles, sugary treats

Burnt toast, charbroiled steak

Spicy jambalaya, down in the Big Easy

Crusty bread, intoxicating spirits

Hot peppers, caramelized onions,

Crunchy vegetables from the garden

sinful desserts, buttery corn on the cob

Earthy fiddleheads, baklava -

These are tastes of creation.

Textures of Creation – v2

Smooth glass, clear, or in the prism’s spectrum

Cool of polished marble in Washington’s monuments

smooth of a baby’s skin, freshly powdered

Soft of a ripe peach’s fuzz, the fruit underneath

soft of a sheep’s wool, warm to the touch

soft warm ocean water, running off my hot skin

Rough oak bark, below its broad leaves

Thick tough alligator hide, so ancient

Coarse granite stone, solid, or appearing so

rough, light pumice rock, light and airy

Sharp thorns of a rose bush,

protecting the delicate blooms

sharp quills of the porcupine

Gritty sand, between my toes

Moist humus, under the forest canopy

slippery oil, sticky pine pitch

Algae covered broad leaf seaweed

scaly snake skin, sometimes discarded

Hard sea shells, baking on the shore

Hot coils on the stove, glowing red, alive,

cold ice on the pond, for skating, pierced for fishing

Brittle ancient pages, crumbling under my touch,

pearls of, rivers of, sweat on my skin in the hot sun

Coarse sawgrass, gelatinous bullfrog egg masses

Fuzzy bunny fur, spiny sea urchin

These are textures of creation.
