Jacob, I Understand

A fall on the ice, two plus year ago
a concave spot, in my left hip,
where it once was convex,
a reminder of that fateful fall
at the back of the parking lot
lost my balance, my way to the door
fumbling with keys, papers,
the clutter of life, changing our focus

So, I understand Jacob, the pain in the hip
the constancy of the discomfort,
changing you, your path in life,
your name, for you struggled,
wrestled with God,
out there in the desert place
knocked you off your own path
turning once more toward the creator
reborn Israel, with the sore left hip
moving on in life,
with a reminder, like me
of a fateful struggle
the impact of reality
on our sore bones
