Winter afternoon bright and sunny
the green against the gray
eastern hemlock luminous
on the asphalt shining
drawing me to bend
to lift its branch to my eye
Not knowing what to do next
transferring the sprig to
the snow pile
green warming,
a cocoon forming,
soon to be encased
in its own cave of ice
