Typist

Early morning (or very late night)
Carbon and ink eraser, with the bristles
Before Whiteout
The Corona clacked away
Her fingers forcing the old keys
through the ribbon onto the bond paper

My latest masterpiece, assignment
for Junior or High school

My 1st champion and typist
Encouraging and cajoling
Railing against the procrastination
But accepting the edits, changes
That might lead to the A
and a good college
for her first-born.

Beach Glass

How do you beach?
Sorry, don’t want to get
Too personal
Just asking, to get a perspective
To put us on the same page.

Do you lay in place
drink in the rays, melt the stress?
Or maybe play – ball, Frisbee, or V-ball?

Not me. I walk, the length of the beach
Too restless to sit
Lost in my own thing
Looking for shells, people,
and beach glass.

Taking in the scene;
Hoping I remember where I left her
on my return.

Peter

Calloused hands
hearty handshake
Bright eyes
and easy smile
consumed his face

Brothers we are
Mi Amigo,
and confidante,
through the
struggle
of life, day to day
transitions we each
faced, amid the routine.

Knowing the other’s story
from our own.
Parallel tracks in the sands
But our own too,
to add color and spice
to the banter.

Falls

Back out into the wet woods
Walking and hiking
But always looking, watching,
Searching for that one moment
when the beauty of creation
finds a ready observer

Do you really see when
you are out there?
Peer through the underbrush,
the straight lines
for the curve of the slipper
caught in midair above its stem,
lost in the green.
Pink and white
amid the pine, birch,
maple and oak.

Climb the trail
up the granite,
stop to gather mica
watch the mud
see the deer tracks
and crushed princess pine,
framed by checkerberries.

Rush of the falls
curtain down the cliff
Real reward
For my quickened pulse
and wet brow.

Descend again,
but not too fast.
Don’t want to miss
The second act
of the drama.
The actors deserve no less.
My best to the Director.

Blank Indorsement

Blank indorsement
on the allonge
of the 7-party check.
Weeks until it
reached the
amused banker,
until it bounced.

Nice Teeth

Seven descended on the table
Away from the crowd
He sat in the middle,
Back to the wall
Surveying the scene

She approached,
Young, pert, saucy
Ready to please
Ready for banter, the bluster

He watched her come
Stride across the room
To take his order

Did she really hear it
His thoughts expressed
By her young lips
“Nice teeth?”
She asked

“No, No”
“I said Iced Tea”

Oh, but it was too late
The comrades were ready
Eager to jibe and jab
To dis’ his blurt of thought
In too public view

Ordering fell apart,
Cascade upon torrent
Variations lost -
You get what I give ya -
Refuge needed

Ah, yes -
Chicken Quesadillas, dear sweet friend

Oh, yes, my dear listener
It was a signal, an assertion
His standard fare; but oh so much more
That night
When nice teeth
Became the watchword
Throughout our night.

Poetry Count // Hiatus

- With the 5 poems posted today, I have now posted 250 poems.

- I am going to take a short hiatus in posting new poems so that I can focus exclusively on preparing for the NH Bar Exam for the next 10 days. Look for more on the other side (I have already identified 35 I want to write).

Vacation

Time off
Time away
Time to recharge
To fight another day

Fun and sun
On the run
To the park
To the beach
In the car
We’ll go far

Happy still
Need to Chill
July to August
Ready to deal
With September
To December

Cicada Feet - v1

High in the trees
After subterranean slumber
Your song exalts
Summer heat

I found you
By the path
Underfoot
Alone

Damp flesh
From exertion
I reached,
Pushed dust
Before you
Touched your cellophane wing

Alien life
Black body
Abandoned cigar butt
Hammerhead Eyes
Clear cape
Black ribbing

You climbed -
Tip, knuckle
Back of hand
Lunar landscape
Tentative
High stepping

Soft hairs
Sawgrass feet
Scrape, slide
Fall to earth

Congo Square

Sneakers of mud
Squish between my toes
Move to the music
Unhinge my spine

Rain upon me
Don’t have a care
Feeling the deep bass
Drumming of the African beat
Camera and pack
Swing, I sway
In place
In bliss

Mountain

Algae, moss and lichen
Up above the trees
Granite, quartz and mica
Cleared by the breeze

Running down the spine
Hikers trail and water
Fault-line and convenience
Guide my feet and father

Fir and scrub and balsam
Fragrant in the air
Draw us to the summit
Up the rocky stair

Up above the tree-line
What a vista to perceive
Spring, summer or autumn
One hike is but a tease

Stepping Stones

Moments, choices, paths taken
And not taken
For a purpose, a reason
In their own season

To learn, to grow
Do we know
When we choose
What we have to lose
Repeating themes
Or so it seems
Throughout our day
Come what may

Or is it better to have charted and mapped
As some of us as apt
To see the end
So as not to pretend
For our course is ours to see
Before we reach eternity
