The Shadow of A Life
One life, all we have
all each one given
the shadow of a life
that which is left behind
Some forgotten
some remembered
some a moment of time
some even more fleeting
Live as if this is the last
and that they will remember your dreams
the choices we each make
the lives which we touch
The way we walk in this life
the legacy that we leave behind us
This is the mark we leave
the shadow of our lives
the ripples in the water
shadows in the sands of time

What if when we die
we get to see
to have our own cinema
sitting at God’s feet
our film, our journey
the Wonderful Life we led
what if we were able
to see the ripples we left
what if we read in the book of our life
all the lives we changed
not just those in the first person
not just face to face
what if the concentric circles
their descendants in time
all who were touched by our lives
were written there as well
What would that story be like
how thick would that book be
for someone so giving, so richly blessed,
someone who gave of themselves
to show others beauty
sharing a laugh or three
offering comfort in their pain
choosing joy instead
How many pages would there be
how many lives changed
for someone to see in paradise
sitting at God’s feet
how much laughter, joy
pouring from the heart of God
welcoming someone such as he
into the courts of eternity.

Walking through Calvary
Journeying to the cross
but walking through Calvary
on the way of the Shepherd
from death to life
Walking through Calvary
on the way to the empty tomb
only in pausing remembering
of the sacrifice, the gift
What it means that he came
that he lived, died for us
that the lamb climbed the cross
and paid the ultimate cost
Only in the passage
from death into life
dying with our Savior
to have a chance to live

Not racing, running
not running away either
journeying to the cross
all these days of Lent
Moving from his ministry
healing the sick, the hurting
setting the captives free
from their pain, their bondage
Seeing his visage change
his decision to turn
his face to Jerusalem
training the disciples,
that they would come along
Focused on the center
the place of power in his land
the city of David corrupted
false piety, righteous demands
Going into the city
overturning their tables
the money-changer
chased from God’s house
The last meal,
new words of covenant
giving his body, his blood
that we would live again
Trials and suffering
shame heaped on the lamb
our sin taken up his head
carried to Calvary
Choosing the way of the cross
climbing the timbers bare
dying that we may live
crying out to God

Only in God’s Image
We are a mere reflection
painted on the glass
only a spark inside
far less than God
Only God’s reflection
an image of the divine
a piece of him planted only
in your heart and mine
Yet that spark enough
that seed deep inside
growing, moving
setting our feet
Changing our lives
to share God’s love
offered to us freely
through the sacrifice of the cross
The Son who came down
fully man, fully God
healing us to Him
to our Creator, our Lord
Only in God’s image
but that is enough
showing God to them
from our hands and our love

Let us begin our time of discernment and renewal in prayer. May the Lord guide us in our journey this morning. . .
The Lord be with you
And also with you
Let us pray. . .
Loving and Gracious God, we thank you for this day that we may come into your sanctuary and worship you. We thank you that you are with us always and that you guide us on this journey of life. We pray to feel your presence with us as we hear the word you have for us this day. May your Spirit fall down upon us, may it mold us into the likeness of our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Shape us into a congregation that not only worships you but into one that is passionate about and for you .Form us into a Fruitful Congregation that not only practices what we preach but is open to your Spirit of love and kindness. Speak Lord, your passionate people long to hear your voice. . . Amen.
Good Morning. . . I find it very interesting when I watch some of those church services on T.V. The people seem to have so much love and passion for God. They are there praising God with uplifted hands. It is as if they live and breathe the Spirit of God. You know those commercials for the “Songs4Life” CD’s. I have even been to some concerts that the people are singing with their hands raised, singing out their praises to God. What a moving moment that is for me. It really touches me right down to my core.
There are so many ways to worship or not to worship God. There are so many ways to bring honor to God in prayer. . . in song. . . in word and deed. In the reading from Psalms this morning, the psalmist is just reveling in God and his glory. The psalmist would rather be in the Lord’s house, in the Lords presence, than anywhere else in the world. The psalmist is happy and content in the loving arms of the Almighty God, the Father of all humankind and that is his whole source of being. To be that in-tuned, that much in love with God, how wonderful is that?
But that is not the end of this psalm of love and adoration. Listen to the rest of the Psalm. But I want you to listen. . . to feel what the psalmist is feeling. I want what the psalmist is feeling. I want you to close your eyes, take a deep relaxing breath and listen. . . Read the rest of Psalm 84 from the NRSV Bible. . .
Did you feel it? Did you feel the love and devotion to God? How lovely is the Lord’s dwelling place. . . how wonderful to be in His courts. . . to be sitting at His feet.
As we are on this journey of discovery, we are journeying with the book “Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations” by Robert Schnase. We talked last week about Radical Hospitality and of how in order to show it, we need to practice it within our own walls. . . about how we need to show mercy and grace to each other in order to extend it beyond the walls of the church. This week, we are on the road of Passionate Worship.
You see, passionate worship connects people to God and also to each other. People who practice this come together with and expectancy. . . they expect to encounter God and Christ. They are not there “for the show” they are there to see, to feel, to hear the glory of God come down to them. They want to see Jesus in their midst. They give their whole heart and soul to God. Oh what a feeling. . . when God’s people are deliberate in seeking Him out!
God uses worship to heal the broken hearted, to mend relationships with others and with Him. Our hope is renewed and our faith is strengthened as we worship God with our whole selves. . . from the depths of our being! Passionate worship is a life changing event. How can we not change? We are so in love with and grateful to God that we can’t help but change.
Unfortunately. . . in this day and age. . . we have changed what our passion is. We have allowed society tell us what is worthy of our passion. . . we have compromised our values and that is a shame. There is nothing like a “good worship service” to give us a new perspective on life, to help us see more clearly what is important.
What needs to happen is that we, as Christians, need to fall back in love with our first love. We need to rekindle to love we have for God. In order to convey the love of God to the people around us we actually. . . now I’m stepping out on a limb here. . . but we actually need to be in love with God. In order to practice Radical Hospitality we need to practice it with God. . . be passionate with Him. . . allowing Him to rule our lives. . . and with others within the household of faith. . . what a concept. . . ! Is it really the passions of the world that matter or are our passions much more than that? What is it that we value most in the world? What are our Passions? What is it that means the most to you and to me? How will we...you and me. . . be that passionate lover that God so wants us to be? What are we willing to risk to let our passion be shown for the entire world to see? Who is the true lover of our souls?

Let us pray. . .
Loving and Gracious God, we thank you for this day that we may come into your sanctuary and worship you. We thank you that you are with us always and that you guide us on this journey of life. We pray to feel your presence with us as we hear the word you have for us this day. May your Spirit fall down upon us, may it mold us into the likeness of our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Shape us into a congregation that not only worships you but into one that is passionate about and for you .Form us into a Fruitful Congregation that not only practices what we preach but is open to your Spirit of love and kindness. Speak Lord, your passionate people long to hear your voice. . . Amen.
Good Morning. . . I find it very interesting when I watch some of those church services on T.V. The people seem to have so much love and passion for God. They are there praising God with uplifted hands. It is as if they live and breathe the Spirit of God. You know those commercials for the “Songs4Life” CD’s. I have even been to some concerts that the people are singing with their hands raised, singing out their praises to God. What a moving moment that is for me. It really touches me right down to my core.
There are so many ways to worship or not to worship God. There are so many ways to bring honor to God in prayer. . . in song. . . in word and deed. In the reading from Psalms this morning, the psalmist is just reveling in God and his glory. The psalmist would rather be in the Lord’s house, in the Lords presence, than anywhere else in the world. The psalmist is happy and content in the loving arms of the Almighty God, the Father of all humankind and that is his whole source of being. To be that in-tuned, that much in love with God, how wonderful is that?
But that is not the end of this psalm of love and adoration. Listen to the rest of the Psalm. But I want you to listen. . . to feel what the psalmist is feeling. I want what the psalmist is feeling. I want you to close your eyes, take a deep relaxing breath and listen. . . Read the rest of Psalm 84 from the NRSV Bible. . .
Did you feel it? Did you feel the love and devotion to God? How lovely is the Lord’s dwelling place. . . how wonderful to be in His courts. . . to be sitting at His feet.
As we are on this journey of discovery, we are journeying with the book “Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations” by Robert Schnase. We talked last week about Radical Hospitality and of how in order to show it, we need to practice it within our own walls. . . about how we need to show mercy and grace to each other in order to extend it beyond the walls of the church. This week, we are on the road of Passionate Worship.
You see, passionate worship connects people to God and also to each other. People who practice this come together with and expectancy. . . they expect to encounter God and Christ. They are not there “for the show” they are there to see, to feel, to hear the glory of God come down to them. They want to see Jesus in their midst. They give their whole heart and soul to God. Oh what a feeling. . . when God’s people are deliberate in seeking Him out!
God uses worship to heal the broken hearted, to mend relationships with others and with Him. Our hope is renewed and our faith is strengthened as we worship God with our whole selves. . . from the depths of our being! Passionate worship is a life changing event. How can we not change? We are so in love with and grateful to God that we can’t help but change.
Unfortunately. . . in this day and age. . . we have changed what our passion is. We have allowed society tell us what is worthy of our passion. . . we have compromised our values and that is a shame. There is nothing like a “good worship service” to give us a new perspective on life, to help us see more clearly what is important.
What needs to happen is that we, as Christians, need to fall back in love with our first love. We need to rekindle to love we have for God. In order to convey the love of God to the people around us we actually. . . now I’m stepping out on a limb here. . . but we actually need to be in love with God. In order to practice Radical Hospitality we need to practice it with God. . . be passionate with Him. . . allowing Him to rule our lives. . . and with others within the household of faith. . . what a concept. . . ! Is it really the passions of the world that matter or are our passions much more than that? What is it that we value most in the world? What are our Passions? What is it that means the most to you and to me? How will we...you and me. . . be that passionate lover that God so wants us to be? What are we willing to risk to let our passion be shown for the entire world to see? Who is the true lover of our souls?

Even Judas, every prodigal
each one of us, though damaged
broken, stubborn
lost within out sin, selfishness
a child of the risen Lord
offered a place, welcome
At the table too
sitting with the Christ
offered the bread, the cup
his body broken for us
love, grace, poured out
on the altar of the cross
passed around the table
by the lamb, our king
offered to each salvation
whatever choice we make

The light waning
the upper room growing dark
the quiet building
the Seder starting
common words of remembrance
of God’s saving from slavery
But something different
the words new
a covenant, a sacrifice
Jesus would die for me and you
At the table too
each time we remember
not just once a year
each time we break the bread
returning to the upper room
hearing our savior’s words anew

Leaving a Mark
What if when we die
we get to see
to have our own cinema
sitting at God’s feet
our film, our journey
the Wonderful Life we led
what if we were able
to see the ripples we left
what if we read in the book of our life
all the lives we changed
not just those in the first person
not just face to face
what if the concentric circles
their descendants in time
all who were touched by our lives
were written there as well
What would that story be like
how thick would that book be
for someone so giving, so richly blessed,
someone who gave of themselves
to show others beauty
sharing a laugh or three
offering comfort in their pain
choosing joy instead
How many pages would there be
how many lives changed
for someone to see in paradise
sitting at God’s feet
how much laughter, joy
pouring from the heart of God
welcoming someone such as he
into the courts of eternity.

in love with God
How to explain my feeling
in love with God
within Him meaning
a purpose, a call
Walking with my Creator,
feeling the touch of His hands
guiding me ever
in the way of the lamb
in service to my neighbor
my sister, my brother
a tug to something greater
to walk on the water
without fear of falling
to boldly follow his calling
molded by the potter

in love with God
within Him meaning
a purpose, a call
Walking with my Creator,
feeling the touch of His hands
guiding me ever
in the way of the lamb
in service to my neighbor
my sister, my brother
a tug to something greater
to walk on the water
without fear of falling
to boldly follow his calling
molded by the potter
feeling the warmth of his light
his mercy upon me
calling me further
to walk more fully
to trust completely
to walk on living water

When the ice grabbed you
pulling you into its grip
that night in the mists
the moment, that instant of time
Did you hear her cry
when they told her
you were gone, no more
when the mile marker
marked where grief was born

Crushed
– about cleaning out my father’s car the day after his fatal
accident. The weather was very cold and the passenger door was where the
gearshift would be. The license plate of the car that ran into his was there
too. The glasses he wore were in the right rearmost spot and his watch was in
the left rearmost part of the car. The driver seat was broken backward from the
force of the accident and his blood was on the backseat where he landed.
