Closer to Christ – v2

Close to our Savior, our brother
feeling the yoke, the weight He carried
the cross He bore, for me, for you
walking yoked with him, as were His first disciples
feeling His strength, His suffering, His courage
the Word made flesh, walking this journey
guiding us, walking here with us

Closer to Christ, in this Lenten season
feeling Him with us along the way
marching, as His apostles, His witnesses
out into the world, His messengers
His light closer to them, the outcasts
those who need His love
those like you and me

Closer to Christ – v2
February 21, 2009
Closer to Christ
based on email Partners in Ministry message
2/20/09 from Bishop Peter Weaver
“TIME AND FASTING.

As we begin Lent, I would once again commend to you the wonderful spiritual discipline of fasting. John Wesley considered it one of the six primary "means of Grace." But I was surprised to read TIME magazine’s cover story (Feb. 23) on "How Faith Can Heal" commending fasting also. "One of the staples of both traditional wellness protocols and traditional religious rituals is the cleansing fast, which is said to purge toxins... Done right, these fasts may lead to a state of clarity and even euphoria." Dr. Catherine Gordon of Children's Hospital Boston is quoted about the positive changes that occur in the body and brain (and I would add, spirit) during a "short-term fast." The "Wesley fast" consists of not eating from after dinner on one day to just before dinner on the next day... giving up two meals over a twenty four hour period. If you have any questions about your health you should check with your doctor first. It can be tough at first, but the members of the congregations I served and I found it to be a great blessing whether used just during Lent, or year around as Wesley did.

There are other forms of fasting, such as foregoing things we think we "can't do without" like television or shopping for non-necessities. The time saved or the money saved can then be put to extra time for meditation or supporting special mission projects. It becomes a plus, not really a minus. Fasting centers us in the Spirit, confirming that strength that is greater than our appetites. It is an exercise in "God's will, not mine be done." What may seem at first to be "denial" becomes "affirmation," and that which at first seems to be "depriving" becomes a fullness of cleansing and clarity. Try it yourself, and commend it to your congregation.

Whatever spiritual disciplines you undertake during Lent, I pray that they will draw you closer to Christ, the Cross, and New Life!

Words I Needed to Hear – v2

The Lord placed words in my heart
this morning in devotion, words
to sustain me, to guide me,
in the choices I have to make, in
leading the life he has laid out
for me, here and now

Help me Lord, to take comfort
in your words, to see the path
you have laid out for me
and to take it, faithful
trusting You only
for my life, here and now

while it may be bread – v4

My brain understands
of this I am conscious
I know that it is bread
that it is grape juice
(we wouldn’t have wine,
we’re Methodists);
But while it may be bread
it is the most special on earth
this is a metaphor of what Christ did
how he died, his choice,
giving himself for us.

In Our Own Way Evil – v2

God’s indictment
on the people
on each one
all of us guilty
in our own way evil
in darkness, in sin
bowing down to our own idols
our piece of the world
separating us from God
needing Christ’s sacrifice
to make us clean
needing to confess, repent,
to turn from our sin

Love became flesh – v2

A verb became a body
the Creator of all
Love became flesh
On that day
Jesus coming
Love became flesh
and dwelt among us

God descended
from the throne
to the stable
Love was with us
in the baby Jesus
Love became flesh
and dwelt among us

negotiating with the Beast – v7

knowing his name
all too well, intimate,
and him knowing mine
the demon, the chaos
the conflict inside
pulling on my life
the struggle on the path
the way of my journey

a fractured self
seeing both sides
the good of creation
the fall of man
urges of the flesh
desires of the heart
competing, fighting
tearing me apart

negotiating with the Beast
the passions of the flesh
now that the box has opened
the spirits of the dead
the cloak of the Beast
the darkness ascendant
now part of our body
as if merged with us

foolish as it was
standing before them
seeking to reason
to answer the questions
the demands of desire
talking with them
their emotions overflowing
only seeing injustice

the baser stuff loosed
our flesh, our excesses
set into motion, chaos
ready to take control
only to destroy
but we add fetters
nothing that the Beast wants
seeking our destruction

together one creature
the good and the bad
but what if we try
to change the Beast,
turning its direction
to tame its excesses
to make something noble
out of the pure instinct

The Mind of Christ – v2

As a human, mortal
each one of us here
a calling to be of the same mind
to take on the mind of Christ
to love others as he loved us
caring for their needs

Picking up his yoke
our cross, the way
walking humbly with God
seeking his face

Speaking out as he did
our voice against unjust power
our hands, our hearts,
our shoulders to the wheel

Sent as he was sent
following the Christ
where we are called
humbly, as he did
with the mind, with
the heart of Christ

His Final Week – v2

From the palms, that moment
the king acknowledged
as if they understood the fulfillment
all prophecy revealed
triumphantly entering David’s city
the crowds shouting hosanna
welcoming our king;
but the joy did not last
those in authority threatened
power unwilling to yield
the dove, the lamb, a sacrifice

The beauty of the last supper
a new covenant revealed
the treachery of the betrayer
Christ’s cries in the garden
before his capture and false trial
brought before the governor
the seat of foreign power
sent to the cross to die
an offering for our sin

Yet as at the beginning
joy filled the morning
resurrection on Easter
death, sin, no more in control
love triumphing, God’s plan fulfilled
giving us hope for the morning
when our work here is done

The word King on Christ’s sign – v13

nothing more profound
the prophecies fulfilled
the promise of God
in Him complete
the bold assertion
the speaking of truth
the word, King, on Christ’s sign
the light of the word
not something less than that
Pilate proclaiming, speaking
truth to their power
naming their crime
they were killing the Son of God
