to press leaves only – v2

his words to us a trigger,

his testimony carrying,

taking me bodily me back

to my own memory

finding a leaf in a bible

silhouettes only, outlines frozen

as if between sheets of wax paper

turning to dust, unloved

carefully stored, treasured

pressed in their decorative bibles

some like the one he described

to press leaves only, unread

the poetry, the words bleeding

into the flesh dying, drying

between the bible’s pages

turning to dust, unloved
