his words to us a trigger,
his testimony carrying,
taking me bodily back
to my own memory
cutting through the fog of
time
an image becoming clear
conjured from the ether
finding a leaf in a bible
placed there perhaps
randomly
silhouettes only, outlines
frozen
creating a tactile
impression
as if pressed between
sheets of wax paper
turning to dust, unloved
carefully stored, treasured
or at least in that moment
before they too were
forgotten
pressed in their decorative bibles
some like the one he
described
sitting on the table for
show
to press leaves only, unread
the poetry, the words bleeding
melting into the flesh
dying,
the drying leaves the paper
capturing the ancient words
pressed into flatness
between the bible’s pages
turning to dust, unloved
