I know him, I see him, almost daily,
in fair weather or foul, present,
in good times or in his struggles,
with demons at his heels, heavy,
stumbling, stammering, drunk, untamed,
his words slurred; his body disheveled.
I touch his dirty hands, his thick breath,
I count his wet, soiled money, crumpled,
Yet, I feel his softness, his humanity, his shyness,
his life on the streets, the outside, the wild,
unknown to me fully, but I know its toll on him.
I care about him; he has become my true friend.
Suddenly he began reciting yesterday, speaking, clearly,
ancient words of promise, of power, of courage,
imparted by God to Joshua, the leader of God’s people.
I turned from the cash register to listen, to truly hear
him…
I know these verses too, but they are a part of him, deeper,
armor for the jungle, his struggle, for his protection, holy.
They are more than memory, they are his sword, his shield,
scripture indwelling within him, at the ready, strength,
cutting through the humidity, the normalcy of the morning.
His voice has never been stronger, his words never clearer…
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid” …
God is with him, with you, with all of us, now, out on
the road.
