Mercy Came Down

Judgment to be replaced
on that blessed day
the day we wait for
this Advent time of year

Mercy came down
God descending
coming to earth as a man
to heal our brokenness

Not in fire or earthquake
not judging the nations
come to bring us back to him
by his loving example

The Spirit of the Law
the commandments in his walk
loving his neighbor so much
giving himself for us

We are to be his people
the sheep of his flock
we must follow our master
going the way of the cross

Knowing What He Knew

For He is God
love alive, with us
knowing what He knew
yet choosing to be emptied
a skin for God’s will
walking as a man
humbling himself
coming to the earth

This is the God we await
in the season of Advent
coming into the world
to redeem us to Him
to make us whole
clean once more
wiped clear of our sin

Awake Easter people
go forth children of Pentecost
go as we have been commissioned
following the way of the cross
Out into the wilderness, the darkness
emptied of the world
filled with the Holy Spirit, bringing light
to the ends of the earth

Re-Think

In waiting in Advent
focusing on Christ
on the God that sacrificed
who gave up His life
that I may live

What would he say
about the choices I am making
on what to do right now
if I would let him
Guide my feet

What would the Savior
the child, the victor
What would He say
about my walk
on the earth

Needing to re-think
to change my focus
from the ways
of the world
to the hope of all mankind

Was He Praying in Heaven

Was He praying in Heaven
as He did in the Garden
humbling Himself
pouring out love

Coming to earth
as a lowly infant
the creator of all
a vulnerable child

Giving up glory
to walk the earth
humbly going
to the cross to die

Did He pray in Heaven
as He did in the Garden
in humbling himself
pouring out love for us all

This Advent Season

A time of reflection
of looking inward
at the priorities of my life
of what I hold dear

Waiting in Advent
for the coming Christ-child
for the promise of His return
at the end of the age

What am I doing
am I truly focused
do I hear His calling
and follow His Word

What must I change
to follow the Christ-child
this God that poured out
His awesome holiness

Walking as a servant
to the people
humbly going to the cross
to set His people free

How can I prepare
my heart for the kingdom
the world for the harvest
when He comes again

What should I be doing
right not, this instant
to further the kingdom
a harvest for the Lord

A Journey

A journey, in Advent
waiting, but hoping
knowing so much
of how the story unfolds

A journey, in Advent
coming to the Christ-child
turning toward Bethlehem
following a star

A journey, in Advent
seeking the presence
the sense of God with us
walking side by side

A journey, in Advent
coming to the Christ-child
kneeling at the manger
offering the gifts of our lives

That First Christmas

After the waiting
centuries of waiting
the prophesies being fulfilled
John jumping in her womb

The angels singing
in a dream coming
to Mary, to Joseph
to tell the good news

Waiting for the Messiah
the King of heaven
to save us from ourselves
the price of the law

Coming humbly
the babe in the manger
God pouring out himself
walking as a man

On that First Christmas
that baby’s first Christmas
the star shining brightly
atop the tree of the sky

The lowly stable
the animals, the shepherds
wise men coming
to bring us worthy gifts

Waiting for Advent
like the people
the prophesy waiting
to be fulfilled

God in His heavens
Christ at the right hand
waiting to come
to bring His people to Him

To that Promised Day

We are hopeful
waiting in this season
for that promised day
when Your kingdom will come

When the swords are discarded
beaten into plowshares
when war will be forgotten
and love will rain down

Christ will reign
returning in glory
riding on the clouds
to set the world aright

Gathering His people
the sheep of his flock
gathering them in
to come before our loving God

We Look Forward

In our waiting, hopeful
sure of His promise
God will fulfill
everything He has said

We look forward
for the coming Christ-child
as real now
as in the days long ago

We look forward
filled with hope
to the return of the Savior
riding on the clouds

Coming to bring us
to gather us in
the lost sheep to heaven
to our eternal reward

Renewed Hope

The season coming
the Advent upon us
filling our hearts
with the joy of Your love

Renewed hope
brimming in our spirits
needing to be shared
the hope for all mankind

We must be sharing
going as we are led
out into the world
that all will be fed

The promise of His coming
returning, giving new birth
not just for a select few
but to everyone on earth

turning to Bethlehem

When Will He Come

The Christ-child came
down to the earth as man
Christ, the Word, alive
before the world began

Coming to the earth
the Advent time remembering
waiting for our coming King
returning in victory

When will he come
our lives on edge, uneasy
knowing the stain we carry

Yet if we turn to him
away from the world
what life he will give us

Hope in His coming
returning to the earth
gathering us to him
to our heavenly homes

Hope and Gratitude

Hope and gratitude
humble before our God
pillars of the season
the beginning and the end

Hope for his coming
grateful when he came
hopeful in His promise
to return in victory

Grateful for the Christ-child
God who came down
descending from the heavens
that we may wear a crown

Marked with eternity
though walking in the dust
returning to heaven
to prepare a place for us

Misdirected Frenzy - 2

The devil must be smiling
as we wake before dawn
changing Christmas into shopping
clawing for a sale

Losing sight of the Christ-child
the miracle of His coming
lost in misdirected frenzy
rushing here and there

Satan must revel
in the folly of this season
where once the manger lay
now endless commotion

The stillness of that night
the angels on high
the shepherds watching on the hill
the child in its mother’s arms

Oh let us return
in the humbleness of Advent
waiting for our King
His birth that had been foretold

Thoughtless Sleep

Awaken our lives
the automation
thoughtless sleep
unfocused in our frenzy

Call us back Lord
into Your presence
away from the world
to Your manger bed

Remind us of Your sacrifice
in leaving the heavens
not just going
humbly to the cross

Change us, in this season
to act more purposely
joy, fully alive
doing Your holy work

Lethargic Worship

Here in this season
in waiting in Advent
Awaken our spirits
our heart
from lethargic worship
from lukewarm devotion
from our focus on the world
not on the risen Christ

Refocus in Advent
on the coming Christ-child
from the ways of this world
to the way of the cross
Lead us to Bethlehem
kneeling by his manger
to see the face of God
in that humble baby boy

Your Advent Alarms Us

From our security
our complacency
going through the motions
Your Advent alarms us
sets ill at ease
But that is a good thing
needing to be started
our lives must be Yours
submitting to God

Asleep to Those Needing Our Gifts

Awaken us Lord
that we may do your work
leading our steps
upon this lowly earth
Guide us to those
who need our loving care
wake us from our sleep
to those who need our gifts
the hope that we share
the light of the world
the love of Jesus
right next door
or to the ends of the earth

Bend Our Angers

Calm our fears oh Lord
bend our angers to your peace
convert our hearts
to the calling of your Son
Help us turn
from the cares of this earth
focusing only on his holy birth

Lead us Lord
in this time and place
to share your love
a smile upon our face
Guide us Lord
that we may do your will
on this mortal coil

Into Your Peace

Turn our hearts
from the stress of this world
the anxieties, the fears
the angers in this life
Turn out hearts
to the soothing of your grace
into your peace
the warmth of your embrace

Fill us anew
with the depths of your love
the sign of the cross,
and the falling of the dove
the hope in the Christ
the babe in the stable
The victor on the clouds
coming to bring your people home

Sermon - "The Reason for the Season", by Pastor Ruth L. Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, Suncook, NH, November 28, 2010, 1st Sunday of Advent

Pastor Ruth Foss
November 28, 2010
First Sunday of Advent
Romans 13:11-14 The Message Bible
Isaiah 2:1-5 God’s Word Translation

“The Reason for the Season”

(Show Video from “A Life-Giving Christmas”: week 1 Hope by Rev. N. Neelley Hicks)

Good Morning. . . this week we are beginning the celebration of Advent. This Advent season. . . Pastor Huntley and I are going to take you on a journey with us. The journey may make us re-think how we think about and do things. . . it may make us re-think our conceptions of the world around us. . . it may make us re-think our thoughts about what the “Reason for the Season” is.

You see. . . Advent is the season that we Christians expectantly wait. . . or wait expectantly. . . to celebrate that wondrous day that “The Word became Flesh and lived among us”. . . that day that mercy came down from heaven. . . the day that radically changed the world. . . the day that our Risen Lord Jesus Christ was born. . . that Christmas day so long ago. . . it is a season that brings hope, love, joy and peace.

This is a time of excitement for me. . . this is a time when I tend to look at my life. . . this is a time of searching within myself. . . this is a time when I not only “prepare” my home that I live in but also the home where Christ lives. . . the home of my heart. It is a time when I contemplate that day when the Hope of nations was born to teach us to Love so that we may have Joy and Peace.

Romans 13 verses 11-14 reminds me of what the season of Advent is about. . . things that we as humankind need to be thinking about. Christ came into the world so long ago and lives within our hearts today but he also promised that He would come back and this passage makes me think about what I should be doing in the mean time. The passage reads: (and I’m reading from the Message Bible). . .

So this is the first week in our Advent journey. . . the week of Hope. As we saw in the Video this morning, Purity lost both of her parents and didn’t know where her next meal was coming from. . . where was her hope in that dire time? Have you ever had a time in your life when you were in a situation that you felt you had no hope? Where did your hope come from? Purity found her hope in the Lord Jesus Christ and through the help of others she was able to learn how to help herself and her family. Not only did she learn how to help herself and her family but whe is now a business woman who is able to take care of her family. But she didn’t stop there. . . Purity shared that hope. . . she share her prosperity with others who were in the same situation she was in. She was hope to others.

My question to you is this. . . have you shared your story of hope with someone else who just may need a ray of hope. . . who in your life needs to hear that hope that you have within? Just as Purity shared that hope with the people of the village where she lives, we too need to share our stories with those around.

OK this is my challenge. . . I want you to take one thing that depletes your energy and bank account and replace it with something that renews your hope and faith. But I don’t want you to stop there. . . I challenge you to take that renewed hope and faith and share it with someone. Take that renewed hope to the streets. The time has come for us to “wake up” to the fact that there are those around us that need hope. . . there are those around us that need that radical hospitality that Jesus showed so long ago. Let us be on watch. . . Jesus promised that he would be back. . . let us spread the Good News of Hope, Love, Joy and Peace and be about the kingdoms work and not asleep on the job. . .

AMEN

Becoming a Hope to Others

In sharing our hope
a witness of God’s promise
becoming a hope to others
in the walk of our lives

Sharing the hope we have been given
the coming of our King
living on the earth
walking as a man

The hope of tomorrow
a future with God
fulfilling all His promises
coming to bring us home

Share Our Hope

Now more than ever
during the time of Advent
we are called
to share our hope
our hope in the Lord

To remember his coming
his descending to the earth
giving up his holiness
to come in humanness

Emptying his divinity
walking with feet of clay
giving up the skies
walking on the earth
to save our very lives

The Home of My Heart

Not so much my dwelling
my physical home
My preparation in Advent
preparing the home of my heart

The place that Christ dwells
living inside of me
His Spirit guiding my steps
as I walk here below

Preparing my heart for his coming
his return from his heavenly home

Searching Within

Searching within ourselves
in waiting for the Christ-child
the coming again of his birth
his walk upon this earth

Looking within our spirits

seeing if we are ready

His Life Beginning

Though He is Eternal
the first-born son
born before the world
before His work had begun

His life beginning
in the stable bare
laid in the manger bed
for there was nowhere else for them

So humble a beginning
for eternal God
coming to the earth to save us
in the form of a man

Somehow this is what we needed
the law not nearly enough
needing the face of our brother
to begin to understand God

Only in his witness
his submission to God’s plan
only in his obedience
can we know God’s ways

We are to continue
to serve our neighbors, humbly
offering them the hope, the love we know
until our Savior comes

Waiting in this season
in these days of Advent
waiting for our Savior
to return in victory

Though Eternal

The wonder of this season
if we truly stop to comprehend
the gift of Jesus
long before the cross

Coming to the earth
walking as a man
though eternal
facing the curtain of death

God loved us so much
that he became a man
emptying himself utterly
made a vessel for our sin

Offering us hope
in the coming of this King
our brother, our shepherd
the servant son
following the Master’s plan

Starting with Hope

As we enter the waiting season
waiting for our King
the story of his birth on this earth
the story of his life

The year beginning again
a story starting with hope
the end times will be coming soon
the time for his return

God’s promise is true
his prophesies fulfilled
the return of our savior is assured
prepare for his coming soon

We know not the time
but we know how he will come
riding on the clouds of heaven
to bring his children home

Entering into this season
into Your Advent time
that we would feel You with us
coming into this place

That we would feel You near us
feel the warmth of Your grace

Oh Come, Lord Jesus, come
we wait for Your return
as we share the manger story

For the Word of Hope

To His holy mountain
to the East
for the word of hope
in the living Christ

We are His people
we should be awake
sharing the love of Jesus
to the ends of the earth

Sharing the word of hope

Look East

Look East
for the rising of our Savior
for the dawning of the day
the end of the long cold night

God has revealed
His love if we would listen
to the voice of the Word
in the life of the risen Christ

Look East, Easter people
for the coming of our Savior
His sacrifice washes us clean
leading us to paradise

Watching and Waiting

Watching the heavens
waiting for Your coming
in this Season of Advent
preparing for Your coming
the power the world needs
to fix its brokenness

Waiting for the Christ-child
the Lord in His glory
risen to save us
defeating death utterly
Together we wait
sharing his good news
the coming of Jesus
in final victory

The Opiate of Shopping

The bright lights and tinsel
the flashing sale prices
lulling us to slumber
the opiate of shopping
as if this was important

Asleep when we should be shouting
sharing the hope in Christ
The wonder of His offering
the season of His coming
caught in glitter and light

Lost in Our Busyness

The Advent calling us
out of our complacency
lost in our busyness
no time for our King

Calling us to harken
to turn toward Bethlehem
to listen for God’s calling
good will to all men

God’s promise fulfilled
in the coming of Christ
Christ’s promise to be revealed
when he comes again

We must let go
break free of our busyness
trusting only in our Lord
our brother and our friend

The Advent calling us
our lives to Him
leading others to our God
our Savior and our King

Asleep on the Job

We must awake from our slumber
that we would not be like the maidens
their oil run out, their lamps grown dim
We must awake, prepare for our Savior
not being found asleep,
silent before His coming
Our calling, our commission
to share our hope in Him
the coming of our Savior
our King coming in His glory

Celebrating the Birth of Our Lord

We gather, celebrating the new year
anticipating, waiting
celebrating the birth of our Lord

Wanting others
the whole world around us
to share in our hope, our joy
the wonder that we feel

God’s great sacrifice
beginning before his coming
long before the manger bed
long before the cross

The decision of the God-head
the Father, Son, Spirit
to descend to the earth
humbly as a human

Celebrating this gift
beyond all measure
God sacrificing himself
that we would live in glory

Hope Like No Other

Hope like no other,
the healing of our Savior,
descending from the heavens
to heal our brokenness

But we couldn’t see Him
though He was right before us
God in the flesh, alive
walking on the earth

The leaders, the people unable
to see the Messiah standing
walking as a man,
in love, in humbleness

Killing our Master
the God of creation
climbing the rugged cross
descending to the dead

Hope like no other
in the rising of our Savior
defeating sin and death
rising to the skies

The promises fulfilled
in the life of the Savior
trust in His Word
the testament of His life

God will return
in victory, in glory
riding on the clouds, afire
to reclaim us to himself

Wait you Easter people
the Commissioned even now
God is coming to gather us in
as He promised in His first coming
as He rose to heaven above

Celebrating His Advent

A season unlike any other
celebrating His Advent
the coming of our Savior
the enormity of the Gift
the grace of our God
raining down from heaven
the divinity like water
pouring out of Him
to descend as a human
frail and broken
of the dust, the clay rising
humbly in submission
following Your plan
His destiny
Going to the people
teaching and healing
guiding them in the way
the way of Life
Going to the cross
drinking from the cup
the plan of the Master
to redeem the whole world
Celebrating His Advent
the coming of our Savior
to save the whole world
to save you and me

Be on Watch

Especially in this season
the season of waiting
for the coming of the Christ
as the babe, in victory

Be on watch for the others
those whom we meet in this life
needing to be comforted
needing so much in their walk

Be on watch for those neighbors
our brothers, our sisters
needing to hear the message
the hope we feel inside

The promise of fulfillment
the prophesy alive
living in the Christ-child
our King who reigns on high

Rejoice, with the Shepherds

Coming to the Christ-child
waiting in this season
on the mountainside
in the quiet of the night
in this wilderness

Rejoice with the heavenly chorus
the angels descending
Rejoice with the shepherds
alone in the night

Jesus coming
our Savior descending
God from his glory
walking in humanness

We must be singing
waiting with the people
for the coming of the Lord
as has been prophesied
to raise from our bondage
our walk upon the earth

To His Manger Bed

To the altar rail
Come with the Magi
to His manger bed
We are called
in this holy season
to reflect on the coming
the coming of the Savior

Our God descending
the Creator, the Master
all of creation in Him
coming to the earth
humbly, as a child

Teaching us His ways
in humble servanthood
emptied of his deity
going to the cross

We must follow
our oil ever ready
our lamps shining
in this darkness
following our Master
in the way of humbleness

Turn to Bethlehem

Turn to Bethlehem
away from the mall
the sales are an illusion
turning our minds from You
our hearts on earthly focus

Turn to Bethlehem
the birth of our Savior
God emptying Himself
coming to earth as a man
dying in our place

Turn to Bethlehem
the fulfillment of prophecy
God giving Himself for us
walking the way of the cross
that we may rise in victory

Turn to Bethlehem
sharing our joy
in God’s keeping of His promise
believing that He is true to His word
the he will come again in Glory

Hasten to Bethlehem

From our place of comfort
out into the night
hasten to Bethlehem
following His holy light

Turning from our world
the limited time and space
opening our hearts to Him
to feel His sweet embrace

Coming in this season
to the Master’s call
awaken from our slumber
giving God our all

Shouting out our joy
sharing with our neighbor
seeking our those in need
our sister and our brother

Leaving home for Bethlehem
as did the Magi
telling His story again
that others would know our joy

Hope Christ offers
in the Son of the living God
hope God has promised
in His coming to judge the earth

Christ will come again in glory
to gather His people in
to raise the living and the dead
to our eternal home

Sharing That Cup

Not any cup
the cup that we share
sharing that cup
which our Savior shared
Coming to the table
the table of the Lord
coming before the risen Christ
to remember his acts
the mighty power of his love
the grace that was poured out
Drinking of that one true life
that our Savior gave for us

God will Teach Us

On his holy mountain
in his sacred temple
God will teach us
how to live
in righteousness

Listen to the babe
the Christ-child living
the risen Savior
teaching us
how to live

God will teach us
if we will listen
harken to his calling
follow his example
walking in humbleness

The Celebration of Advent

The year starting
in wondrous celebration
the season of Advent
waiting for our King

Preparing our hearts
awakening our spirits
our lives focused
on the coming of our King

God descending
what an incredible thought
the Master coming
down as a man

Bringing us to him
as we turn our hearts
away from the world
toward the creator of all

A celebration of Advent
all through the year
the coming of Jesus
our Savior is near

Hope in this moment
renewing our faith
the prophecy of old
coming alive in our sight

Hope in this Moment

Hope in this moment
rising in Advent
waiting for Christ’s coming
to this lowly world

His promise ever new
the fulfillment revealed
God from the beginning
setting about to heal this place

In the coming of the Christ-child
God became a man
walking on the dusty roads
teaching us his ways

Love, as a servant
humbleness, even death
going to the cross for us
healing our brokenness

Rising in victory
the grave, death could not hold him
rising to the clouds of heaven
until he returns in victory

Hope in this moment
rising in Advent
waiting for Christ’s coming
for a hopeful people
the living and the dead

To rise with him to glory
to walk the streets of gold
to see the mansions for us
as has been foretold

To come before our Master
our God and our King
to thank him for all of this
in hope and gratitude

Arise from Our Slumber

Awaken you people
we must wake up
arise from our slumber
our time in the world

We must focus on Jesus
the fulfillment of all promise
God’s love for us
pouring down
down from heaven above

He is the one
the source of all goodness
the means of grace
that redeems our very lives

Awaken you people

The Advent Upon Us

Let our hearts sing
the song of the season
the coming of our Savior
down to the earth

Advent upon us
the season of waiting
our hearts opening
to the promise of God

Turn from the rushing
the mindless frenzy
the stresses of our lives
joyless excess

Center on the Christ-child
the one who climbed the cross
the King in his heavens
waiting to return

We should be singing
shouting from the mountain
coming to the center
the truth in His Word

Get your lamps ready
oil in the vessels
our King will come again
riding on the clouds
