the forest evoking memories - v6

A torrent of emotions, of feelings
a cascade of images, of memory
smells of the lodges, cold air,
tastes even, of hot chocolate, of chili,
something tangible,
rich with love, with family,
seeing the snow on the branches
the deep green of the pines and the white
as we drive by, northward, homeward.
 
The forest evoking memories
of forty, of fifty years ago,
when we went skiing as a family,
joy in that time spent together,
so much memory, in those moments,
the long drives, the fresh fallen snow,
the firsts to touch the fresh powder,
Oh, how Dad was focused just so…
 
Wanting to carve the fresh powder,
to cling to our edges on the boilerplate
needing to leave so early,
so many miles to go,
heading for the slopes
sometimes sleeping in the car
so much memory, excitement,
the smell of the hot wax, the klister,
the jockeying in the main lodge.
 
Burning my mouth on piping-hot chocolate,
eating Colombo blueberry or peach yogurts,
music overhead, “My Sweet Lord”, and so many others,
the wood fires, the feeling, the taste of saltines in my chili,
riding the lifts as a “single!”, jumping the lines,
climbing up into the forests, on the chairlifts,
covered with white, with snow,
before the start of each run.
