A Carpet of Clover

In the small space
the spare bedroom-sized place
between the maple tree
and the shrub, just beyond
the dandelion patch
a carpet of clover
sways in the June breeze
new blooms bursting
ready for the harvest
of little hands,
of shrieks of joy
and giggles of wonder

To the Park

To the Park

Here they are,
the giggle sisters
Mischief and Mayhem
(along with their older sister Chaos)
on the way to play
in the park with Daddy
to run and race
to climb and slide
testing his ability
to watch three of them
with two eyes
Free in the sun
after days of rain
time to put dad through his paces
while mom’s at school

A Thorn in My Side

I am weak; thank you God
for my humility, for the impediment
to my vanity,
that forces me to rely on you,
on Your Grace

To lean on you and to place my trust
on fertile ground, to heed your call
to do your work, in the vineyard,
calling in the wilderness,
on the distant road, in foreign lands

My trust in you Oh my God
the God of my ancestors, of Abraham
and David
Made flesh in my Savior
my guide on this path you have put me on

Like Moses, with speech
or the pain in Jacob’s hip,
I am of clay, needing your strength,
your grace, to exhort, to testify
to use my gifts
in your service

God’s Grace

What a wonderful gift
undeserved and oh so great
He has given each of us
so blessed are we by the awesome
the wondrous nature of
His benevolence
His love for us
His outpouring in covenant
to His people, those who hear
and know the Master’s voice
paid by the price
of His Son’s blood
for you and me

Miss Wendy

Miss Wendy! Miss Wendy!
our three peal out across the driveway,
down the corridor, down the pew
using outside voices where inside would do
Suddenly happier than the instant before

A joy to see her, cling to her
be with her,
sit on her knee,
under the comforting crook of her arm
(if someone else’s child isn’t there yet)

Essential mother to so many
who will miss her
in ways big and oh so small

Hands to wrap their own,
so little it seems sometimes,
strong yet gentle

Safe with Miss Wendy
their teacher, their confidante,
Their friend.

Popcorn Experiment

College was wasted on the lot of us
at least in that moment
or maybe it was the intoxication
of a rainy night in the dorm
freshmen year, or maybe the next,
an experiment that shouldn’t have been started
gone horribly wrong

A round electric popcorn popper
sat innocently on the shelf in his room
a bunch of mad scientists
a motley band
decided to take it out for a test
the domed hood was left where it lay
this was a night for risk
let Caution heed her own wind

Who needs a drop cloth?
What could go wrong?
a liberal pool of oil
a pile of corn
A spark of electricity
a round of Molson
And abracadabra
presto-chango

Mayhem and mirth
We had a blast in the moment
dodging hot kernels and fluffy missiles
We had our fun
But a dorm damage bill
awaited each of us
for the BIG round grease stain
that may still be there
Hope mom doesn’t read this
and remember that bill…

Fruit Flies

He was a real lady killer
a women’s man
for sure
an entomologist in training
he had fruit flies
growing, in the dark,
in his desk drawer
living on a poultice
of past-ripe banana
Yum

Backwash Worms

Have you ever stood in backwash worms?
Worms and night crawlers that come
to the surface of your yard?
when you empty the diatomaceous earth filter?
of your backyard pool?
I have.
And I still remember
Thirty years later
Squish.

Snowflake

She was white, all white
except where she was pink
soft, cute, and she liked leaf lettuce
Her name was Snowflake
the pretty clear albino bunny
that ate the pink insulation
under the refrigerator
in the corner of the kitchen
She had to go

Without Hindrance

Paul was in Rome, under house arrest
but he received guests, without hindrance,
so ends the book of Acts;
but it is the story of Acts, the sharing,
of unpredictable stars,
milquetoasts who gain spines,
power emboldened disciples speaking
in unknown tongues near and far
of early believers,
a persecutor made proselytizer
of missionaries and martyrs

Giving all or dying for holding back
a time of communal living and squabble
but a moment of proclamation
over and over, without hindrance,
spreading the good news
to the ends of the earth
as eyewitnesses to the creation
the beginning of another age
of love and sacrifice,
of communion and peace
a renewed Eden
if we would just follow His path

Handbell Notes

Watching them play
Seeing their notes on the paper
Sensing the fun in practice
in hearing the sheet come alive
Feeling a shake ( )
Never realizing the joy
Captured in the dots and waves
on the printed page.

Last Sunday, the Sunday School students – pre-school to grade 5 - practiced the “Little Boy and the Lunch”, by Tammy Waldrop, about the feeding of the 5,000, along with our Handbell Choir. I was reading along to the program/sheet music. The techniques used by the handbell choir included – “Mallet , Pluck, Thumb Damp, Echo , Martellato Lift , Shake, Vibrato, Let Vibrate, Martellato”. To me, it made me giggle. It was Fun! Here is the web page for this the Little Boy and the Lunch - http://www.handbellworld.com/music/MusicPiece.cfm?Piece=11265

Green Copper

Technically it is an oxidation
a patina of green over the
pure metal beneath
some would argue
a mere fact of the aging process

The green is the soul
the anima
the living skin
over the sculpted and cast face or body
capturing the spark of life
within the subject,
the reason for its existence

Have you seen this truth
when you have looked
at the living statues
clothed in green copper?

Boldness of the Spirit

Four books of sheep,
timid, unsure followers
fearful and obtuse about the incredible journey
their role, these fishers of men
the first to hear the master’s voice,
the good shepherd, the narrow gate,
the light of salvation
Lifted by tongues of fire
infused with power
emboldened with the will to speak,
to bear witness
with new-found wisdom
and backbone of the Spirit
coursing through their veins
transforming sheep to shepherds
followers into disciples
Boldly proclaiming the Good News
to the ends of the world
inexplicably, without hindrance
Continued by each new generation
in its own terms, in its own time
for us in this place

A Pillar of Fire

Angry, oooh were they angry …
bursting, flying out of that hole,
next to the foundation
by the lilac bush
after he lit the gasoline.
A Pillar of Fire,
or more of a swarm
on fire
A cloud of flaming bees
charging at us, like in a cartoon
as we dropped the gas can, the bucket
and ran out into the yard
A failed attempt to rid ourselves
of the nest in the ground
by their bedroom window
Back to the drawing board
and some equally dangerous scheme
to show we can outsmart the bees,
which wasn’t looking good so far,
after the water in the basement,
the stings trying to cover the hole
and the pillar of fire

In the Hushed Choir Loft

In the dark of the empty sanctuary
he toiled, alone, refining his skill
preparing himself,
by drill and practice
to become a servant, an instrument
God’s hands on the organ’s keys
God’s voice in the purity of the notes
coaxed from the pipes in the chancel
to be ready on Sunday, in worship, in public
to share, to proclaim his praise
to ministry in His church
through his playing
of the familiar hymns
so others too would know God
feel Him, as he surely does
through his faithful service

An Angel, a Deacon, and a Eunuch

What was it that the daily reflection asked?
Oh yeah, it was, “If you were set down beside
the carriage of the Ethiopian, what would you ask?”
His response was priceless,
“Hey buddy, could you stop that chariot,
my feet are killing me!”

Okay, so not the mental picture
the writer of Acts had in mind
with the strange story of Philip
and the Ethiopian eunuch.

A funny scene, a scholar
without a clue,
reading the prophets
of a people not his own
Needing an interpreter
finding an agile deacon instead
sent by an angel on a different path

A vision, a sprint, a chat,
a dunking, and poof,
He’s gone
teleported away,
snatched up;
an imponderable moment
like so many in Acts
spreading the word
as the Spirit MOVES you…

May 22, 2006 10:20pm
An Angel, a Deacon, and a Eunuch
Based on Acts 8:26-40 and my conversation with the Reverend Joel B. Guillemette on the questions in the Daily Reflections section on Alive Now for May 8, 2006 – “Read the account of Philip and the Ethiopian in Acts 8:26-40. What do you find most amazing about this story? If you were set down beside the carriage of the Ethiopian, what would you say?” He was the only other human in the bible besides Elijah to be moved by God directly as far as we knew.

Must Consider

What does it mean when we say that
they shall consider or must consider X or Y or Z?
Does it mean that they will use
this information, finding, or recommendation
By no means.
It is our canard,
our obsequiousness,
the hopes of the common folk
hoodwinked by seemingly powerful language
humbled by weasel words
words of choice, by the powers that be
the experts courts and we defer to

They “must consider”
oh, if only they must do more than consider
Because considering can be only
bearing in mind, ponder, think about,
mull over, contemplate
We need to make consider be its other
synonyms – believe, take into account,
judge, respect;
or it will be as its antonym – disregard
An opportunity lost
and a fools errand

Balkans

I often pause to wonder
of the two sides of the
man from the Balkans
who graced my life
with his friendship
and this time
Hours over a glass or
a bowl of salad,
weighed and paid for,
in smoky haze or deep thought
masks worn and parts played
words shared and questions unasked
of unhealed scar tissue,
a life in the jungle,
the struggles of ethnic strife
and the INS.

Between

Between melancholy and disquiet
a brooding cloud
of the restless soul
pacing the floor,
wondering the next steps,
on a road less traveled by
when words do not come
‘tween the good and night
a gap to mend
a breach to heal
on the other side
of restful sleep
