Hands joined in humble, reverent prayer
around the tables of our meeting
praying for comfort and release
for our friend and sister
A pastor's healing hands
joined our own
and raised his voice
offering up our faith
in you Lord
and your endless love
for each of us
By your bedside too
He was there
Touching you, holding you
with his healing hands.
Knowing you were ready
for your journey home.

Explained Parables - V2
Wheat and the Weeds
explained metaphors
of good and evil
now and then
at the end
Too important, too precious
for ambiguity, uncertainty
written out tools for teaching
His interpretation added
to tell the tale
in words
Timid followers
could follow.

Pool Soup - V2
Grass and needles and weeds
stirred by arms and sticks
in the pink pool in the yard
The giggle twins
working together again.
Pitch of this
and a pound of that
balance just right,
clear by the sound
of the singing.
Shake the dirt from
the roots, discard the rest
dead bodies on the walk
Dirt Soup now.
Mmm, just right

Lady Bird's Legacy
Democratic medians
between the black gray
Ribbons of Republican highways
Ike got it done but She
made it work
Bright wild color

Jacob's Ladder
A ladder, a bridge, a portal
connecting us, as the song says,
with the company of saints and angels
who went before us.
How wonderful we too
are among the covenant people
by the words of the God
of the creation, of Abraham,
of Moses and of David,
the God who died and rose
so we could be free.
Genesis 28:12-14

Yard Salad
With an old newspaper
for a plate and
water from the hose
for dressing
for a plate and
water from the hose
for dressing
Four junior chefs,
three to ten,
yanked and threshed a yard salad
from the rain drenched
and shower fed
field beside our in-town home
three to ten,
yanked and threshed a yard salad
from the rain drenched
and shower fed
field beside our in-town home
Clover, dandelion, plantain
and grasses of varying length,
with dirt included bodily,
heaped on the makeshift platter,
stirred with pine and oak,
until they were ready
for the presentation

Tired
I could see her tired
even under the closed lids
of her sleeping face
Body hugged under the covers
Her face toward mine
as I jot these lines
Peace rising with the
rise and fall of the comforter
covering her body
falling into deepening sleep

Finger Shower
Our little helper,
all of three,
upset I was washing the broiler pan -
without her
Move over Dad!,
She commanded,
as she pushed me aside,
so her stepstool
could plant in the middle
of the space before the sink
Craning on tiptoes
hands and arms cresting the countertop
just enough so she could help
Scrubbing the greasy pan,
fresh from the barbecue
the night before,
with a sponge that
swirled the sudsy water
mostly.
After, her little hands,
cupped in my left,
giggled under the finger rain
of the sprayer in my right

Musings
Touching your cool
Bronze skin
Coursing my fingers
Like a reader of Braille,
Silently in the dark
In our sanctuary
Behind locked door,
Over friendly, familiar territory
Picturing what other senses perceive
Smooth and coarse,
Muscle rippling under my hands,
Warm where I travel,
Linger, twirl

Disciple
Disciplined study
And worship
Immersed in the Word
Week upon Week
Words and meaning
Beautiful in the learning
and the language
Growing together
Closer to God,
And His plan,
For each of us
To serve and work
To make more Disciples

I Will
Not the fleeting, fashionable
cute and cuddly – I Do.
No, this isn’t the thing we’re talking about
I Will.
Power of God, commitment continuing
Covenant people responding in-kind.
The God of Creation offered Himself
in sacrifice and in Communion
A perpetual relationship,
Loving, nurturing
All we have to do
Is answer His –
I Will –
with our own –
I will.
It is an invitation of grace
first held out for Abraham
now open to all nations
through Jesus Christ,
our Lord and Savior
I will;
Will you?

Paul's Mistaken
Oooh, what was he thinkin?
Tellin the womenfolk to be quiet,
demur, deferring to their husbands...
Not on this watch, Apostle Paul
We're in the New World here
where they can speak, hold court,
and they do.
Keeping Rome in a comfortable place is all well and good;
but, was he on drugs?
Don't you remember Paul, you were living
working off the goodwill, the largess,
of many women?
1 Corinthians 14:33b-36; but See Romans 16:1-4 & Philippians 4:2-3
(of course, as my pastor reminded me, there is a good deal of scholarly debate as to whether or not Paul wrote the lines in 1 Corinthians, or whether they were added later by others...)

Tellin the womenfolk to be quiet,
demur, deferring to their husbands...
Not on this watch, Apostle Paul
We're in the New World here
where they can speak, hold court,
and they do.
Keeping Rome in a comfortable place is all well and good;
but, was he on drugs?
Don't you remember Paul, you were living
working off the goodwill, the largess,
of many women?
1 Corinthians 14:33b-36; but See Romans 16:1-4 & Philippians 4:2-3

End of Wall
Broken lines,
walls in need of mending
What would Frost say,
or his good neighbor,
behind mended walls?
walls in need of mending
What would Frost say,
or his good neighbor,
behind mended walls?
New England stone walls,
handmade and irregular
severed by highways,
black/gray ribbons/scars on the land
handmade and irregular
severed by highways,
black/gray ribbons/scars on the land
Leaving unfinished, abandoned, cluttered
forgotten boundaries in the woods,
moss covered and leaf obscured
with blunt ends
exposed at the edge, the clearing, the light
by the road
more often taken

Covenant
A people,
And individuals
With His covenant
Beating now,
Under the words
Written on each of our hearts
To follow only Him
And to love one another
As we love ourselves.

Little John
He's there, Little John
to the other's Robin
Buds enjoying the vibe
The stalwart second

Flowers
Three flowers
bloom each day
Falsely fragile Queen Anne’s Lace
Clump of effervescent Daisies
A singular Black-eyed Susan
Wildflowers all
growing in the fields
of our hearts
Each her own
scent, shape, pose
Craning for light, food, attention
Willingly, lovingly tended
by the gardener,
the one who sowed the seed

Love at First Kiss
It wasn't the moment
I met her at the church
The times we chatted
in the coffee hour
No, not in the class,
Studying His Word
It was the first kiss,
the first time I held her
falling into her
warm brown eyes
Feeling her against me
Her lips against mine
joining bodies, hearts and lives
with the first kiss
I met her at the church
The times we chatted
in the coffee hour
No, not in the class,
Studying His Word
It was the first kiss,

Chasing La Luna
Were we chasing her
Or was she chasing us
Down the road
Under that starry starry night
Lashed in the seats
Craning to see her face
Cool and full
Around corner and curve
Down the highway
‘round the cloverleaf
Into the parking lot
Tracking our progress
From home to church
And back again
Under La Luna’s watchful eye
Or was she chasing us
Down the road
Under that starry starry night
Lashed in the seats
Craning to see her face
Cool and full
Around corner and curve
Down the highway
‘round the cloverleaf
Into the parking lot
Tracking our progress
From home to church
And back again

Joanne
The violin sang
over the hum, the rumble
the guitars by her side
They held the rhythm
oh, but she was the soul
verve, the muse
that danced across the room
catching the conversations short
for a moment or two
at the coffeehouse again
Her quick reflexes,
natural smile;
joy in her shared gift,
whether bluegrass or folk
serious or sassy
Pure talent unfurled
smile infectious –
receiving the gift in the knowing
the certainty of His hand –
in the sharing.

Her Hands
Long slender fingers
clutched the bow
caressed the cello
Fingers like spiders
walked gingerly
down the neck
Shuddered on the lines
to urge the quiver of the song
from the wood
Elongated notes
vibrate of the wire
a fog of sound
crafted by
knowing hands

Frozen Splits
Jeff’s ready
watching the action
moving straight for him
at full speed,
fast motion
Black brick
center of attention
sliding on the blade,
stick
Winger on a breakaway
partner, line mate
in the other lane
ready for a feed
Defense falls back,
backward and off balance
caught by the speed
Trying to cut the angle
too late
He slides right to left
anticipating
But they reverse the flow
drive to the net
another pass
Splits –
Glove Save!

Daddy Ray

A turn of the key
The knob opens
From the outside world
To my home
Daddy Ray! Daddy Ray!
They squeal, scream
Drop the drink
Leave Disney behind
Jump up, burst across the room
To my open arms
Bag and baggage dropped
To greet my girls
Each day
When I return

Pillows of snow
Pillows of light, white snow
Atop the raspberry bramble
At the back of the yard
The edge of the wild place
Behind my building
In town
A winter scene
Breathless in the cold still air
Glistening back at me
As the light refracts against
The myriad of individual snowflakes
Gently joining in the blanket
Whisper only
Of dry grasses and a clutch of leaves
Left above on a twig
Breaking my reverie
While I am inside
Hearing the day to day sounds
Of my office place
Clack of keys,
Hum of the fluorescent lights,
Whir of the computer fan
Oh to be loose in the wood
With snowshoes and camera
To crunch among the vines,
Underbrush and downfallen branches
To catch a glimpse of the small features
And magic in the snow

Aerosol Archaeopteryx
Ephemeral denizen of the dawn
Emblazoned on the waking
An aerosol archaeopteryx
Captured for a twinkling
On the heavens
Feathers and ancient bones
Silhouetted in the tracks of the sky
Like footprints in the new-fallen snow
Darkening blue where they tread
Rimmed with yellow, orange, purples
And their spectra
Before the blue
Flying still
Across the dome

Smiles
Smiles on our lips,
On our cheeks,
In our eyes and in our hearts
Even in parting
Last with me
Linger
Whispering
I love you

Even in parting
Last with me

Whispering

Chalice
The sun
Golden chalice
Clutched by God’s hand
Light cut by God’s fingers,
The clouds
The dawning
That morning

Nekked Heinie

A dance it is
but so much more
a statement
Attitude
Rebel in the buff
shake your thang
Oh warrior princess
still only two
Hold still a moment
let me snap a picture
for blackmail
when you are dating

First Snow
Thoughts of walking
in a winter wonderland
with her. She wrote,
“I like snow when it is falling.
All clean and beautiful.”
A friend remarks,
“the snow is here,
everything is white and
appears to be more pure,
almost innocent...”
It is a beautiful kind of first snow.
Everything is more innocent;
but only for a whisper
of time.
Too soon it will clump and fall
Splashed up off the street,
Mixed with grime
But now, in the falling,
milking the sky
teasing as it falls
light, airy
Covering other sins
blanketing a seemingly silent
noisy world
muffled and cloaked
in white

God's Hand
The gentle push
the warm support
The gentle nudge
Of the One who knows what's best
Charting a course
with history, coincidence, and promise
Leading two to become one
as He planned since life begun
Formed of dust, a rib
and His breath of life
One body again
As He intended
Bound together for an eternity
loving, laughing, sharing
Knowing this time, it is meant to be
As part of His Plan
Woven together with love and caring
held together for ever more by God's majestic hand.
From day to day and year to year
they will hold each other dear
the warm support
The gentle nudge
Of the One who knows what's best
Charting a course
with history, coincidence, and promise
Leading two to become one
as He planned since life begun
Formed of dust, a rib

Smell of Snow
Walking the few feet
car to the office
Down the street,
quiet Friday, December
Smell of snow
Cold, damp
Memory
Anticipation
Coming, for sure
Knowing it
In joints,
My senses
Hard to describe
The smell of snow
But it is there.
Let it snow
car to the office
Down the street,
quiet Friday, December
Smell of snow
Cold, damp
Memory
Anticipation
Coming, for sure
Knowing it
In joints,
My senses
Hard to describe
The smell of snow
But it is there.
Let it snow

Living in Lifetimes
May we enjoy and cherish
every breath
we share together,
may we always act as though
it is our last,
may we always
treasure
each other,
so that
each moment
is that lifetime
together,
so that we may share
thousands of lifetimes.

may we always act as though
it is our last,
may we always
treasure
each other,
so that

is that lifetime
together,

Frozen Marsh
Steam rose
Over the ribbon threaded
Through the frozen marsh
This waking
Frost encrusted the
Silent cattails,
Highlighted the skin of
Still-green reeds
Browning leaves, rushes
And skeletal scrub
Ice too soon
But chill only today
Ready to bleed away
With the dawning

Pair
Craning to glimpse
Around the bend
Behind the trees
Hiding in the fog
Our swans
Finding solitude
Beside the other
In open water
Alone together
Away from the bustle,
The noise,
Of the road
Around the bend
Behind the trees
Hiding in the fog
Our swans
Finding solitude
Beside the other
In open water
Alone together
Away from the bustle,
The noise,
Of the road

Stepping Through - edited
A slit cut through
gray, layered bunting
morning sky
Yellow light and white light
Sol walking, pushing,
stepping through
a portal he cut
knee-high curtain,
left leg, right arm
through the canvas of the clouds.
propelling the light
onto the stage
starting the day

Daily Anniversaries
Finding the right words
Overwhelmed, blessed
Shouting my love
each day, for you
Bursting with joy now
and from the first kiss.
Stronger and stronger are the feelings;
from a place I have never been,
even from the beginning.
Here's to a lifetime together –
precious minute by special minute.

Parting
I can't wait
for Saturday
when our parting
is but of our lips
When we don't have to leave
each other's side;
when we can linger
and love

Morning Drive
A skin of frost on the ground,
in the branches, the yellowed fields
film of ice on the pond
low fog lit on down the road
light in the windshield
shafts highlight
glowing milkweed pods
bursting for later rebirth
Quiet, rumble of the engine
Heading from home
heading to work
reversed in the dark
in the branches, the yellowed fields
film of ice on the pond
low fog lit on down the road
light in the windshield
shafts highlight
glowing milkweed pods
bursting for later rebirth
Quiet, rumble of the engine
Heading from home

Barry in the Morning
He’s on the stereo
Smoky, sultry,
Words dripping
After waking,
Start of day
You in my arms
Smell of you
Touch, Kiss,
Linger on your neck
Dance in the kitchen
Pull you in close
Down the road
With me in the car
Bass throbbing in the speaker
Sing along to our words
Openly, wanting you
Away from you, my dear
But you’re with me
Your scent, smile,
Your Love
With me
And Barry in the morning

Arc of the Sky
Warming blue
Across the arc of the dome
He left for us after the Flood
Daubs of color
Dabbed on the sky
Pristine edges
Glinted and glowing
Past dawn
Frozen breath
Frost on the
orange, red, yellow
Fall foliage
Green grass

Across the arc of the dome
He left for us after the Flood
Daubs of color
Dabbed on the sky
Pristine edges
Glinted and glowing
Past dawn
Frozen breath
Frost on the
orange, red, yellow
Fall foliage
Green grass
Cold windshields
Parked cars

Red Sox in Four
Eight straight
ain't it great
A nation in joy
because of our boys
Won in strong fashion
with luck, pitching and passion
A night with a lunar eclipse
song of joy on our lips
Here's to the Red Sox Nation
in a state of utter jubilation

Waking Sky
A fall sky in slumber
warming fan brush strokes,
horsehair bristles,
pushed across the fall tableau
Deep burgundies and dark below
Headlights on
Down the road
round the bend
the view brighter
champagne and plumb and wisp
a bluing of the sky
Another wind
down the twisting backroad
translucent yellows
screens of color
Farther on
white takes the stage
above a fireball flame sun
Then the sun filled
the windshield below the visor
warming my face
on this fall morning
after the dark
warming fan brush strokes,
horsehair bristles,
pushed across the fall tableau
Deep burgundies and dark below
Headlights on
Down the road
round the bend
the view brighter
champagne and plumb and wisp
a bluing of the sky
Another wind
down the twisting backroad

Then the sun filled
the windshield below the visor
warming my face
on this fall morning
after the dark
