Healing lives, changing us
the stones rolled away, removed from the fields
Moving stones and changing lives
the power of the resurrection
the Easter star shining
Using metaphors of moving stones,
good Yankee stones,
and the stones by the road
on Palm Sunday morn’
ready to sing if the crowds had gone mute
The stone guarding the tomb
rolled away Easter morn’
to reveal his glory
Our these stones changed lives,
healing us, making fields to grow
hearts to be mended
and a harvest of souls
to be brought home to the Lord

Two Thieves
With Christ crucified
humble, simple men
the two thieves on the cross
dying beside the Lord
What they must have felt
their lives slipping away
knowing all too well their own sin
dying beside the unblemished lamb
One would deride him
taunting God, even in pain
the other begging for mercy
receiving the gift of paradise
Two thieves hanging
making such different choices
mocking our savior
or seeking his forgiveness,
confessing our sins to God.

Which Jesus Do You Follow
You know . . . bringing up the girls is so hard. There are times when they just forget those “fruits of the Spirit” and they just act in ways that are so unloving to one another. There are times when they like to gang up on each other. For instance . . . there have been times when Erica and Shanequa gang up on poor Shyanne. I think that sometimes Shanequa does it just to go along with Erica. Erica is the oldest and of course Shanequa wants to be older so she goes along with what Erica says. It is not whether Erica is right or wrong . . . Shanequa just wants to go “with the crowd.” She just wants to be liked by her big sister and so she just “goes along to get along.” It is so infuriating. I think to myself “how can she do this to her best friend (as Ms. Shanequa calls her)? How can she treat Shyanne in such a way that she ends up feeling alienated and alone?” There are times when we as adults do the same thing. We go along to get along. We go along and don’t say anything when someone tells an “off color” joke in the work place. We go along and don’t say anything when we see a colleague get in trouble when we know that they don’t deserve it. We don’t want to make waves.
Let us pray…
Loving God, you who speak to your children through your Spirit and your Word, we pray this day for your Spirit to be among us that we may hear the word you have for us today. Speak to us in ways that we will understand your will for our lives. Help us to be your ambassadors of love, compassion and peace to the world around us. May we be a beacon of light in this broken world in which we live. And it’s in Jesus name we pray. Amen
Over the past few weeks, we have embarked on a journey into the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life. We have been with Him in the upper room when the Lord’s Supper was first instituted. We have walked with Jesus to the Garden of Gethsemane where he prayed for what was about to happen. We have been in the audience when He was put on trial by the religious leaders. And now we will be with Him as He comes before Pilate, as He and Barabbas are brought before the people, we will hear the choice that the people made on that fateful day so long ago.
To give you a little history . . . the religious leaders made up accusations against Jesus and they wanted him put to death. They didn’t have the authority to do this so they decided to bring Jesus before Pilate. He had the authority to do so. They figured that because Jesus was “claiming to be King of the Jews”, Pilate would take offence to this, after all, Caesar was the ruler over the people and this man was claiming to be. The sentence for someone doing so was death. But . . . Pilate saw through their jealousy and fear, he knew the religious leaders real motive behind bringing Jesus before him. Jesus was not trying to lead some rebellion against Rome. The only authority He was against was the authority of the religious leaders. He spoke out against them not Rome. He didn’t want any part of it. So Pilate sent Him to Herod and again, Herod saw no real reason to put Jesus to death. He wanted no part as well so Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate (talk about passing the buck, neither wanted to take part in this, neither really wanted to put Jesus to death. They saw no real reason to but these religious leaders kept pushing the point). Now . . . here we have Jesus before Pilate again. What was he going to do. He knew Jesus was innocent, he knew that he had to try something. Here is where the story begins in Mathew 15:1-15. (Read Mathew 15:1-15 NLT).
The people wanted a Messiah, they wanted someone to free them from the Roman oppression. Here we have Barabbas, a man who fought “against the man” with power and might, with the sword and here we have Jesus, a man who said that they would overcome their oppression by loving their oppressors, by doing good to them, and through this goodness, they would change the hearts of the Romans and therefore stop the oppression. When Jesus came into Jerusalem, they wanted this Messiah to take the world by storm. They wanted this messiah to take up the sword and fight for the people and free them. But Jesus was not that type of Messiah and they were very disappointed. (By the way . . . both men had the same first name that means savior, Jesus Barabbas and Jesus the Christ) Some of the people that gathered here were some of the merchants and money changers that were in the temple when Jesus the Christ turned over the tables and called them thieves. They were angry and wanted Jesus to go away, never to be heard from again. These were the same people who greeted Jesus with palm crying “Hosanna” on Sunday and now were crying “Crucify him” at the end of the week.
This crowd, sheep being led, didn’t understand Jesus and how He would bring about change; they believed that the only way they would survive was by the sword, by a violent uprising. So what was Pilate to do? He needed to please the people. He didn’t want the uprising that would happen if he freed Jesus instead of Barabbas. He had the power to do so but chose to go along with the crowd to quiet them for awhile, to satisfy their request. Pilate had no trouble killing Jews, he had done so many times before. But this man, this Jesus, was different and he knew it. He knew that Jesus had only come before him out of the envy of the religious leaders. For some reason he didn’t want to put Jesus to death and try as he might, he decided to go with the flow instead of using his power in a way that he saw fit. Now think about it, how many times we have been like Pilate? We don’t want to stand out, we want to be accepted, and we remain silent when our words and actions could be the thing that makes a difference. Or how many times have we been like the crowd, not happy because things are not as we feel they should be so we want, we cry for, something that we think will work even though we know it is wrong, it is not how God would have it?
These two men, Jesus and Barabbas, remind me of two men that fought for Civil Rights. We had Malcolm X on the one hand, who believed that the only way to be “freed from the man” was with violence. Then on the other hand, there was Martin Luther King Jr. who believed that “freedom from the man” would come through gentleness, it would come through nonviolence, it would come through modeling our Lord Jesus. Which of the two men made the most impact on the Civil Rights Movement? Which of the two men lead to rights for the African American? Which of these two men made and impact on history itself? The violent or the meek saved the day? (Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth)
Jesus could have said something, he could have denied being king of the Jews and be done with it . . . carried on His ministry. That’s all the religious leaders were looking for. But Jesus knew what had to happen. He knew that He was here to bring about a change that would enable God’s children to have a right relationship with Him. Praise God that Jesus chose the harder path, not the path of the crowd. He made a way for you and for me, the way of the cross of Calvary. You see . . . Jesus said no . . . no to His will but God’s will. God said no . . . no to the broken relationship that sin caused. Love said no . . . For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son and whom shall believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Mercy said no . . .

We don’t want to stand out, we want to be accepted, and we remain silent when our words and actions could be the thing that makes a difference. Or how many times have we been like the crowd, not happy because things are not as we feel they should be so we want, we cry for, something that we think will work even though we know it is wrong, it is not how God would have it?
These two men, Jesus and Barabbas, remind me of two men that fought for Civil Rights. We had Malcolm X on the one hand, who believed that the only way to be “freed from the man” was with violence. Then on the other hand, there was Martin Luther King Jr. who believed that “freedom from the man” would come through gentleness, it would come through nonviolence, it would come through modeling our Lord Jesus. Which of the two men made the most impact on the Civil Rights Movement? Which of the two men lead to rights for the African American? Which of these two men made and impact on history itself? The violent or the meek saved the day? (Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth)
Jesus could have said something, he could have denied being king of the Jews and be done with it . . . carried on His ministry. That’s all the religious leaders were looking for. But Jesus knew what had to happen. He knew that He was here to bring about a change that would enable God’s children to have a right relationship with Him. Praise God that Jesus chose the harder path, not the path of the crowd. He made a way for you and for me, the way of the cross of Calvary. You see . . . Jesus said no . . . no to His will but God’s will. God said no . . . no to the broken relationship that sin caused. Love said no . . . For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son and whom shall believe in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Mercy said no . . .

coming to earth as a baby
walking as a man
Going before us as a sacrifice
fulfilling the law, prophecy
taking on the form of a servant
a slave to sin he would be
Carrying our cross,
the weight of our disobedience
poured into him, to overflowing
the long walk to Jerusalem
more than we could make
On him, though human,
God, Emmanuel

Following a path, trusting
a pilgrimage, a journey
knowing pain would come
being faithful to his calling

in the decisions that they made

From the palms
triumphantly entering his city
the crowds shouting hosanna
welcoming the king
but the joy did not last
those in authority threatened
power unwilling to yield
the dove, the lamb, a sacrifice
The beauty of the last supper
a new covenant revealed
the treachery of the betrayer
cries in the garden
before his capture and false trial
brought before the governor
the seat of foreign power
sent to the cross to die
an offering for our sin
Yet as at the beginning
joy filled the morning
resurrection on Easter
death, sin, no more in control
love triumphing, God’s plan fulfilled
giving us hope for the morning
when our work here is done

The Ripples Returning
In casting the seeds
the stones, the words
into the ground, the sea
ripples touching distant shores
but sometimes returning to me
A wonder, in the sharing
the words finding fertile soil
reaching hearts open
sending their love in reply
Returning these gifts from God
that they would be planted deeper in me
Casting more stones out into sea
seeds on the wind,
planted on distant shores

Each a separate star

Email 3/22/10 from the National Religious Campaign Against Torture
TORTURE IS A MORAL ISSUE
Dear NRCAT Supporters:
We are pleased to tell you about the decision made by the NRCAT Board of Directors to expand our mission to include two new areas of work. The decision, made at the Board's December 2009 meeting, followed a 6-month planning process.
NRCAT will now have three areas of work as we carry out our mission to end forever torture that is sponsored or enabled by the United States:
Continuing our efforts to secure permanent changes in U.S. policy to prohibit - without exception - all U.S-sponsored torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment of detainees;
Working to end torture in U.S. prisons, including the use of long term isolation and devices of torture; and
Advocating for U.S. policies and practices that will help end torture by other countries.
We will continue to focus much of our energy this year on efforts to secure a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the use of torture since 9/11 and recommend measures needed to ensure that U.S.-sponsored torture never happens again.
The reports on each of the two new areas presented to the Board in December are available on the NRCAT website.
We have also described this year's work within each of these areas in our new 2010 Agenda and a new edition of the NRCAT brochure (http://www.nrcat.org/storage/nrcat/documents/nrcat_brochure.pdf).

Without Freedom Still - edited
Our church family, our community
gathered, took time off,
pondered our freedom,
on the anniversary
our Declaration of Independence
when our forefathers dissolved the political bonds
when these colonies proclaimed, to the world,
what we as a people hoped for,
what we as a nation believed in
as a people, set apart,
that each one of us hold these truths to be self-evident,
that everyone is born equal, each one,
that the creator gave us unalienable rights,
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
How wondrous are those words,
how much we as a country have achieved
casting off the chains that hold us back
how far together, we have to go; but
We here in this land are free, by most measures
How hard life must be
in the many places on the globe
where people are not yet free
where there are people still
in the grip of slavery, in bondage,
in fear for their lives,
for their children’s lives
for any kind of future
for religious persecution,
indiscriminant death
How blind we are as a people, as individuals,
to the realities around the world
How silent this nation is
to the evil that stalks this sphere
How much more America could do
if each of us took our freedoms more seriously
and invested in justice
to the four corners
of this troubled planet

Seeds of Easter
In the dark of the season
our true nature, the sins of man,
wanton self interest
driving the actors on the state
Seeds of Easter
joy dormant, waiting
waiting to burst forth
a harvest surely to come
So long before
in the words of the psalmist
water in the desert
to bring the seeds dormant
to abundant life
In the ashes, the soil
seeds of Easter planted
like the bulbs of each spring
waiting for the coming light of morning

our true nature, the sins of man,
wanton self interest
driving the actors on the state
Seeds of Easter
joy dormant, waiting
waiting to burst forth
a harvest surely to come
So long before
in the words of the psalmist
water in the desert
to bring the seeds dormant
to abundant life
In the ashes, the soil
seeds of Easter planted
like the bulbs of each spring
waiting for the coming light of morning
to spring forth in loving new life

Because of Their Teaching
Before the garden, before the cross
Christ mindful of you and me
praying not just for his disciples
those he knew while he walked the earth
Praying for us, those who believe
not by seeing him in this world
faith because of the teaching
telling his story, God’s love
come into the world
in the pages of the holy scripture
Faithful, each in our turn
going because he had been sent
into the world, each of us following
continuing what they had started
going because we were sent

Where were the Hosannahs
Where were the hosannahs
that rang out five days before
there before Pilate
the crowd calling for his blood
Christ, the Messiah
the savior of the people
welcomed into David’s city
a hope of real salvation
But challenging the leaders
the priests, scribes, the Pharisees
a balance to their power
questioning their authority
Trying him in secret
in the middle of the night
bringing him before Pilate
telling him to do what is right
Hecklers in the crowd
the mob seething in frenzy
the Passover lamb
sacrificed on the cross
Our sins, all prophecy
fulfilled in this story
even the evil that they did

The Elites in the Crowd
Not the common people
the ones who had cried Hosannah
who had laid their cloaks, the palms
when he had entered in
The leaders, the priests
the elites in the crowd
the mob in that courtyard
in that unholy seat of power
Calling for Christ to die
holding onto their power
silencing this voice
this thorn in their side
Pilate in judgment
unwilling to stand up
giving them Barabbas
putting Christ to death

Standing in the Mob
Flames fanned by the leaders
maybe a few palms greased
coins to instigate
the crowd to frenzy
crying for his blood
that Christ would be crucified
Standing in the mob
sheep being led by hired hands
focused on the way of the world
echoing the taunts of the righteous
whipping up their passions
insurgent revolution
not his unconditional love

Evil stalking, a presence
in the courtyard of power
that fateful morning
Christ judged, convicted
whipped and beaten
wearing a crown of thorns
Following the crowd
the calls of the leaders
none speaking a different word
Cries of , “crucify Him!”
when offered mercy
choosing Barabbas instead

A Fitting Sky
A fitting sky this morning
the story continuing
not bright and sunny
like yesterday
The sky dark and foreboding
clouds muffling the day
as evil held sway
that day in Jerusalem
Christ now the prisoner
beaten and spit upon
convicted by a corrupt court
brought to the seat of power
handed over to a foreign authority
seeking a sentence of death
The irony of the players
strange bedfellows on the stage
each of them playing their part
seemingly in slow motion
the frenzy of his capture and trial
now a languid colloquy
before the stirred up crowd
Standing before Pilate
the Roman authority
leaders stirring the crowd
calling for the blood of the savior
Choosing to free the criminal
insurrection, instability
Sending Christ to the cross,
fulfilling all prophecy.

Violent revolution
set free by the mob
True reconciliation
requiring the cross
With path man would take
easy if we learn from history
the people straying
turning away from God
only by his sacrifice
the unmerited grace
love finding a way
to reclaim us
from ourselves
