speaking to the rocks

in deep, detailed conservations,
over many years, decades,
in touching, in caresses,
speaking to the rocks
the mosses, the others,
a community meeting, sharing,
deeply, personal lives…
 
in time scales we cannot see,
ancient citizens, moving,
a conversation with rock,
with water, with the soil,
with the earth, where they are,
living intimate, infinite lives…

The sentience of the woodlands – v3

walking into the woods
alive all around me, crying out,
climbing the mountain within them
drawn by the whisper, the wooing,
the song dwelling within...
 
the sentience of the woodlands
a consciousness, a knowing, alive,
the trees, the plants, the bushes
even the rocks, the soil, the dirt,
each of them has their own story to tell…
 
if we would only perceive it,
if we would but listen, more deeply,
ancient cries of the forests, of nature,
of our time on this earth, our journey,
we have so much more to learn…

The sentience of the woodlands – v2

walking into the woods

in the time scale of the mosses – v4

too often we live self-centered,
self-serving lives, as if we are the center,
of everything, of the earth, of history,
that we were the only ones who matter...
 
we need to think outside of our own context,
our sense of time, of motion, of purpose,
human vocabulary, meaning,
in seconds, in minutes,
the days of our lives,
how quickly we change…
 
we are so different than
other creatures, other forces,
those who have gone before us, extinct,
those ancient ones still with us now,
 
in the time scale of mosses
ancient citizens, growing, moving,
carrying on a conversation with rock,
with water, with soil, with the earth,
within the place they find nutrients,
living indefinite, infinite lives.

A Blanket of Moss – v2

The cold wet granite
smooth over the ages
wrapped in warmth,
a blanket of moss.
 
Draped by the hands,
loving hands of the creator
caring for something
as simple as rock.
 
Our day of communion
out into the forest, sensing
the presence of God
by our sides.
 
Out in the forest
away from the hectic,
busyness of daily life,
beauty in the stillness.
 
A glimpse of God’s providing
even for the bit of the earth
warmed by the blanket,
shimmering in the weak light.
