Remembering the ancient lift
the counterweights, the cables,
using my arms, my body
to set them in motion,
to rise to the heights, the attic,
within the office building.
The warrens in the attic
frames of 2 X 4’s, chicken wire,
holding tenants’ storage,
few locked, things forgotten;
New freight of the business,
with broken, discarded typewriters.
Missing panes, clouded windows,
some pigeon droppings present,
another room of empty boxes;
So cold in winter, wind rushing,
and sweltering in summer
animatronic dolls for the front windows.
Moving cartons of acetone, overstock,
plus reams and reams of paper,
Pfaltzgraff plates and dishes
driving wooden two-wheeled dollies
across the boards, the paper
silent corridors in the attic.

I just looked online at the images of the exterior of the building.
Very little has changed how it looks on the outside.
