even though God forgives
the ripples, the echoes
the choices we made

the stones we carry

A Drumbeat Growing
The sounds of the marchers
of those hidden in the shadows
of a nation rising
of the disenfranchised, the struggling
of those seeking freedom
from oppression, from anxiety
no voice in the machine
the whole not listening
yet they continue to speak
the groundswell forming
not abating, not yet
the voices of the masses
crying out for our freedom
for the masters to be silenced

Whom do they represent
the leaders, the elite
do they represent the people
or the ones with the strings
the leaders, the masters
the powerful, the elite
all entwined, unraveling
like strings of the tapestry
falling to the streets
picked up by the people
a new fabric being written
tied together, binding up the nation
a new vision, tableau
new pages being written
reconciling us together
the frayed and forgotten

Claiming Greed as a Virtue
Claiming greed as a virtue
the accumulation of wealth
the pursuit of money
death in itself
Making the name
the profession of faith
claiming the name
of Christ itself
yet holding onto treasure
not giving of one’s self
not treating your neighbor
with love, sharing the wealth
silos full, not giving
claiming works, not grace
the measure of our faith
a bold lie nonetheless
none of it true,
none of it Christian
the cries of the people
yearning to be free
the boot of the masters
the ones pulling the strings of power
they are the ones
who should be in the streets
not the hurting, the hungry
desperate for tomorrow
caring for their children
those who will follow
all of them seeking
a refreshing of the spirit
wanting to know Jesus
his authentic teaching
loving our neighbor
giving freely
not holding back

Making the Name a Lie
Claiming the name of Christian
yet taking the power, the wealth
claiming hard work is holy
an end unto itself
Silos full, overflowing,
yet their neighbors are starving
claiming they are lazy
unworthy of sharing
Forgetting the lessons
the commands of our Savior
to seek out ways to help them
all those in need
Claiming the name of Christian
yet making the name a lie
as if we earn salvation
by our toil, our works in this life
Believing the lies of this world
yet claiming the name of Jesus
none of them truly faithful
of the servanthood of Christ

Weaving together the imagery
of the flowing stream
the believers in the waters
connected in time

the living waters flowing
welling up within us
as we have been gifted
flowing through, beyond
to those downstream
all part of the movement
the sharing of the message
of Christ’s coming
God’s grace, sacrifice
healing us in the waters

the ribbon, the tide
the living waters
downstream from those before
fed by the waters, the bread
their acts of faith
sharing, spreading,
witness to God’s grace
Christ’s sacrifice
feeding us, quenching our thirst
that we may be filled
sharing with those downstream

with her little bucket
The woman at the well
as she came to Jesus
knowing it was taboo
for her to be there with him
yet God’s plan unfolding
with her little bucket
a story to heal us
to save us from our cares
to lift us in the waters
to drink and never thirst
hunger of our spirit
at the living waters
hearing his message
his message for us
broken and tarnished
with wear and a little rust
he was offering
life, renewal
to the woman with the bucket
and all of us on earth
living downstream
to drink of the living waters
solving all our needs

hearing the power

Bread of witness,
water of sacrifice
here in the well
in the living water
the bread cast
sent on the waters
sent downstream
to wash upon our bodies
our spirits, our lives
to feed us, no thirst
to offer us salvation
through the bread and the wine
to give us hope
a chance to be redeemed

taking Christ in
his Spirit indwelling
filling us, welling up
an endless spring
filling us, overflowing
thirsting no more
come to the well
you will be made whole
drink deeply, of his blessing
sharing with the world
all those who will follow
from the same well
at the well of living water
none will be thirsty
all will be fed

Living Down Stream
in the same water
the same journey
living down stream
from the ones gone before us
those who believed
drinking the living waters
those who cared enough
to share the same with us
living down stream
yet above some others
those who will follow
downstream from us
we must too share
offering the water
not ours to keep
filling only our buckets
our silos, our garners
we are to share
to offer the same water
to give to others
that none would be thirsty
to offer to them
the same living water

Just as the rich man
the parable of Jesus
the food stored
all of your wealth
here on earth
your treasure, gathered
your silos full
here on the earth
Yet your neighbors starving
crying, dying
going without food
without medical attention
living, in fear,
not knowing tomorrow
where will their hope be
what can they believe in
in this land of promise

The same living water
flowing, through time
from those who have come before

living downstream from us
The same living water
flowing, through time
from those who have come before
through your hearts and mine
wanting to be faithful
to live out our belief
wanting those who follow
the joy which we keep
deep within our hearts
pouring from our lives
welling up within us

The stone, the brick
these bits of hope, of faith
building a well
in this place
a foundation of our call
our witness,
here, for all
to offer love
the grace we share
the bond of belief
in the salvation of Christ

flowing, year on year

Thankful for a Flawed Vessel
I am thankful, remembering
a flawed vessel
who shared with me
that living water
a flawed vessel
chipped but wanting
to call me to that well
that I would be saved
that I would know my Savior
filling me, joining me
to the well, the living water
filled to overflowing
water into the same stream
sending it onward
to those now downstream

Social and Economic Justice – v2
Christ in his ministry
turning the world around
its focus upside down
awaken our hopes, our desires
seeking justice instead
The first to be last
our riches in heaven,
not of the earth;
even in death,
we have new birth
All of us brothers and sisters
even our enemies, our neighbors
unconditional love, unmerited
living water flowing
freely given by God
Social and economic justice
all of us should be fed
free from oppression and dread
nothing in our silos, empty,
relying on God instead.

to stand with the people
yearning to breathe free
and not worrying about the results,
that it is always right to stand for basic human rights

all the protests in Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Oman,
Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Palestinian Territories, Djibouti, Mauritania, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, etc.
