They did not keep us safe
on the playground,
in that asphalt jungle…
We were at the mercy of them,
the bullies, our tormentors…
 
They failed all of us,
all the children in their care…
Our only choice to fight back
to stand up to the bullies,
the instruction of our parents…
 
Anger and scar tissue,
over the hurt unanswered,
unaddressed in healthy ways…
Limiting my vision, safety,
the struggle of fight or flight…
